What Has Closed Or Changed Since Other Guides Were Written

What we found on 27 October 2026 that other guides miss:

  • Fleet, the small fine-dining room run by Josh Lewis and Astrid McCormack, was reported closed by Broadsheet in January 2024. Some guides still list it.
  • Roco Ramen took over Fleet's site, and its website now says its "Brunswick Heads location" is "closed" while the chef runs pop-ups elsewhere.
  • Baloney's Deli, listed in some guides under Ocean Shores, now gives its address as 2 Wordsworth St, Byron Bay.
  • Izakaya Yu is listed by one guide as open Wednesday to Sunday; its own website shows it closed on Saturdays and Sundays.

If a place you remember is missing, it is because we could not confirm it is trading today.

Why Figtree Creek Retreat Suits A Food-Led Stay

Figtree Creek Retreat is a freshly renovated A-frame cottage in Middle Pocket that sleeps six, with three bedrooms and one bathroom. For a food-led trip, these listing details matter most.

  • A kitchen you can cook in. The upstairs kitchenette has induction plates, an electric portable oven, an air fryer, a microwave, a toaster, a kettle, a blender, a wok, a rice cooker and a Nespresso machine with capsules.
  • A barbecue with a view. The private balcony has a barbecue and views, so farmers market produce goes straight onto the grill.
  • Fresh eggs and oranges. The listing mentions fresh eggs when the hens are laying and seasonal oranges from the property.
  • A fire pit for after dinner. The fire pit area has seating, and firewood is provided.
  • Short drives. Billinudgel is about 7 minutes away, Brunswick Heads about 12 and Mullumbimby about 18.

Add the pool (heated in winter), a private creek, stargazing and a 5.0 rating from 93 reviews. See Figtree Creek Retreat.

Who This Stay Suits And How A Group Uses It

Couples can book River or Lello's, then keep the next night simple with cheese from Bottle & Hoop by the fire pit. Families get custom-built bunk beds, a high chair, travel cot and baby gate on request, a trampoline and monkey bars, and a selection of games.

Groups of up to six can split the cooking: a Friday market run, a balcony barbecue, a night out in Brunswick Heads. Work retreats have a dedicated office with fast, unlimited internet. Pets are welcome, which suits the dog-friendly outdoor areas at Hotel Brunswick and Wandana Brewing.

Practical notes from the listing: self check-in with a smart lock from 3pm, check-out by 10am, no cleaning fees, and an EV-friendly power point in the private carport.

A Three-Night Eating Plan From Middle Pocket

Thursday to Sunday catches the Friday market and the Billinudgel opening days. Check-in is from 3pm.

Thursday: arrive and stay close

Settle in, then drive about 7 minutes to Rosefina's for tacos (Thursday 4pm to 8pm on its winter hours). Fire pit afterwards.

Friday: market morning, cottage dinner

Leave by 7:30am for the Mullum Farmers Market (about 18 minutes). Coffee at Lulu's, pantry extras at Santos Organics, then home. Cook dinner on the balcony barbecue.

Saturday: Brunswick Heads day

Breakfast at Bruns Bakery, then the river (see our Brunswick Heads river and Torakina Beach guide). Lunch at Yami, gelato at In The Pink, then home for a swim. Return for dinner at Trouble San or Saint Maries.

Sunday: slow lunch

Coffee at BK's, a long lunch at Lello's (weekend lunch 12pm to 3pm per OpenTable), and pizza from Sticky Fingers for the final night.

Worked example, driving time: Thursday's Billinudgel return trip is about 14 minutes, Friday's Mullumbimby return trip about 36 minutes, Saturday's two Brunswick Heads return trips about 48 minutes, and Sunday's one return trip about 24 minutes. That is about 122 minutes, or just over two hours of driving across three days, using the listing's drive times.

Before You Head Out: A Quick Checklist

  • Check the venue's website or social page for today's hours.
  • Book Friday and Saturday dinners, and every night between Christmas and New Year.
  • Plan Christmas Day at home: Bruns Bakery says it is closed only on 25 December, and we found no published Christmas hours for the others.
  • Bring a cooler bag for market produce.
  • Pack a corkscrew if you plan to BYO at Old Maids or Sticky Fingers.
  • Leave early on market mornings, as parking is limited after rain.

Ready to plan the trip? See Figtree Creek Retreat in Middle Pocket, browse all WTP Holiday Homes, or read the Northern Rivers Rail Trail guide for a ride that works up an appetite.

Drive times are rough estimates from the Figtree Creek Retreat listing and change with traffic and season. Opening hours were checked on 27 October 2026 and can change, so confirm before you go.
