Golf Near Preston Beach At A Glance

Preston Beach is a small coastal town bounded by the Indian Ocean, Lake Preston and Yalgorup National Park, 124 kilometres south of Perth according to the Shire of Waroona. It has around 185 permanent residents, a general store with fuel, a resort bar and restaurant, and a 9-hole golf course. That makes it an easy base for a relaxed golf break: one course you can walk to, and four more within a comfortable drive.

The table below lists every course in this guide, nearest first, with the visitor green fee each club publishes. Prices are as listed on each club's own website on 27 October 2026, and they can change, so check before you go.

Preston Beach Golf Club: The 9-Hole Course In Town

The Preston Beach course sits at 33 Panorama Drive. It is listed by the Shire of Waroona under its sporting and activity groups, and the Shire's own visitor page for Preston Beach simply says the town has "a 9 hole golf course". Tourism Western Australia calls it "the challenging nine-hole golf course adjacent to Yalgorup National Park", where you play "under the critical eyes of the resident kangaroos and emus". It is a club course, not a resort: players' reviews on golf apps describe it as community run and maintained by volunteers.

This is the course to play when you want golf without a car. You can walk over in the morning, play nine holes in the cool, and be back for breakfast on the deck. It also suits mixed groups, because nine holes is a manageable outing for a beginner or a teenager who is just learning.

How to get a game: the club does not publish green fees or tee times on any official page we could find. The Shire lists the club with a Facebook page, and the Shire's Preston Beach Spring Fete page gives the club's phone number as (08) 9739 1557. Call or message the club before you arrive, so you know how visitors pay and which days the members' competitions run.

Bring your own clubs. We could not confirm club hire at Preston Beach, so if you are travelling without a set, Harvey and The Cut both hire clubs (details below).

The club also brings the town together. Its annual spring fete, held on the course, has featured stalls, food vans on the green, a sausage sizzle, mini golf and kids' games. The Harvey-Waroona Reporter quoted club captain Gary Knight in 2024: "Everyone is welcome."

How Preston Beach Got Its Golf Course

The course is almost as old as the modern town. The Shire of Waroona's history of Preston Beach records that the settlement began after good fishing catches were reported in the early 1950s. In 1957 a local syndicate bought 25 acres of land for 2 pounds an acre, and electricity arrived in 1973.

1974 to 1978

The golf course was built in 1974, reticulated in 1976 and opened in 1978, privately owned alongside the caravan park next door.

1981 to 1982

Both the course and the caravan park were owned by Alan Bond in 1981. By 1982 they had been sold on.

1984

The Preston Beach Golf Club was formed and the course opened at the instigation of the Preston Beach Progress Association.

1986

The Shire of Waroona purchased the golf course.

The Progress Association says it was instrumental in establishing both the local fire brigade and the golf club, and in 1993 it began building a small community hall on land excised from the adjacent golf course. When you walk the fairways you are walking through a big part of the town's own story.

Waroona Golf Club: 18 Sand Greens For $10

If you want a full 18 holes for the price of a coffee and a muffin, drive inland to Waroona. The Waroona Golf Club on Hill Street describes itself as an 18-hole sand-green course set in natural bush, with seasonal wildflowers. The club was founded in 1932.

The green fee is $10.00 for 9 or 18 holes, and the Shire of Waroona lists the course as an "18 Holes Green Fee Honour System". The club's green fees page gives four ways to pay:

1Card by QR code: scan the QR code on the small desk to pay by credit or debit card. This is the club's preferred option.
2Receipt book: write a receipt and keep it with you while you play. Authorised members may ask to see it.
3Cash envelope: put cash in an envelope with your details and post it through the slot in the door to the right of the desk.
4Direct debit: the account details are on the club's green fees page if you cannot scan the code.

Bookings are not essential. The club says green fee players are welcome to use the course at any time, but asks visitors to let competition players play through. Club competitions run on Wednesday mornings (ladies) and Thursday and Saturday afternoons (men), so a weekday morning other than Wednesday, or a Friday or Sunday, is likely to be quietest. The club phone is (08) 9733 1700.

Waroona is also where you do a big shop: the listing for Gracie & Dan's Coastal Retreat puts the Waroona IGA and pharmacy about 22 minutes away, so a round at Waroona and a grocery run fit neatly into one trip.

Playing Sand Greens For The First Time

Sand greens are still found at some country courses in Australia. Instead of grass, the putting surface is sand, and it plays differently from a grass green. Waroona is the sand-green course in this guide, so it is worth knowing what to expect before you arrive.

Expect a different roll

The ball reacts differently on sand than on grass, so spend a few minutes putting on the first green before you start counting strokes seriously.

Ask about local rules

Sand-green clubs set their own local rules for preparing your putting line and smoothing the green after you finish. Check the signs at the clubhouse or ask a member before you tee off.

Leave it as you found it

The course is looked after by its members. Repair your marks, follow the club's instructions for the greens and give way to competition groups.

"Green fee players are welcome to use the course at any time." Waroona Golf Club

Harvey Golf Club: 18 Holes Under Half An Hour South

Harvey Golf Club is on Myalup Road, Harvey, and it is the closest 18-hole course to Preston Beach in this guide: about 32 kilometres by road. The club calls itself one of the most rewarding and challenging courses in Western Australia.

Green fees on the club's website are $40 for 18 holes and $25 for 9 holes. Electric carts cost $40 for 18 holes and $25 for 9 (the hirer must be 18 or older), club hire starts at $20 including a hand trolley, and a hand trolley on its own is $5. Visitors who want to play in a club competition pay a $30 visitor competition fee.

When visitors can play: tee times are booked online every day. Visitors can play all day Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, after 12:30pm on Thursday, and on Saturday by online booking only. Social mixed competitions start at 12:00 on Sundays when fixtured. The course is closed to all play before major events, so follow the signs on the tees. Bring your receipt: the club says you may be asked to leave without proof of payment.

Visitors can register on the club's website for online bookings, then log in to see the tee sheet and book a time. Competitions that welcome visitors include Wednesday Scrounges and the all-day Saturday hit-off. The clubhouse and bar open Wednesday to Saturday, so a drink after your round is easiest on those days. The club's contact number is 0455 342 444.

The Cut Golf Course: Ocean-Front Links At Dawesville

The Cut is the big day out. It sits in ocean-front dunes at Dawesville, about 46 kilometres north of Preston Beach, and Visit Mandurah says more than half of its 18 holes have views of the Indian Ocean. Tourism Western Australia describes it as a links-style experience and notes its full-size driving range and modern clubhouse and restaurant.

The Cut's golf rates page says booking your round directly through its website gives the best value. Note that its "weekend" rate runs from Friday to Sunday. The published rates are:

Round (walking, carts can be added)Mon to ThuFri to Sun and public holidays
18 holes, booked online$67$80
18 holes, walk-in$77$90
9 holes, booked online$50$60
9 holes, walk-in$55$65
18 holes, cart and lunch special (online)$110$120

Extras: an electric cart costs $25 per person for 18 holes on a shared seat, or $50 for a full cart ($15 per person or $30 for 9 holes). A standard set of hire clubs is $35 for 18 holes or $20 for 9, and a push trolley is $10 or $7. On Tuesdays, holders of an Australian Senior Card can play 18 holes with lunch for $49 (call to book).

The course is open from 6:30am to 5:30pm in summer. The bar opens at 8am every day and stays open late Friday to Sunday, and the kitchen serves from 8am on Saturdays and Sundays. The main number is (08) 9582 4444, and the golf shop and bookings line is (08) 9582 4420.

Because it is about 40 minutes each way, The Cut works best as a full morning: tee off early, have lunch at the clubhouse, then stop in Mandurah on the way home or drive straight back for a late-afternoon swim at Preston Beach.

Pinjarra And Mandurah: If You Want More Courses

Golfers on a longer stay have more choice to the north. Pinjarra Golf Club, on the corner of Pinjarra Road and Sutton Street, was established in 1912 and has an 18-hole course, a driving range, a chipping area and a putting green, according to Visit Mandurah. It is about 50 kilometres from Preston Beach. Book through the club's online tee times or call 08 9531 1252.

Visit Mandurah's golf page also lists Meadow Springs Golf and Country Club and Secret Harbour Golf Links, and features Mandurah Country Club and The Links Kennedy Bay in its course videos. These are all further from Preston Beach than the courses above, so treat them as a reason for a separate trip rather than a day out from the lake.

When To Play: Late Spring And Summer Golf

November and December are good golf months on this coast, as long as you plan around the afternoon heat. The Bureau of Meteorology's long-term averages for its Mandurah station show the warming trend clearly:

MonthMean maximumMean minimumDays of rain (1 mm or more)
October21.9°C13.5°C6.0
November25.0°C15.6°C3.9
December27.6°C17.5°C1.7
January29.7°C19.0°C1.3

Source: Bureau of Meteorology, Mandurah station 009977, 2001 to 2026 averages. Preston Beach is about 45 minutes' drive south of Mandurah, so conditions can differ.

Those averages mean few rain-outs, but warm middays. A first tee time soon after sunrise gives you the coolest air and a good chance of seeing kangaroos on the fairways. Check the Bureau's daily forecast for sun protection times, take a hat and plenty of water, and plan to be off the course or in the clubhouse by the hottest part of the afternoon.

Kangaroos, Birds And Course Manners

Wildlife is part of golf around here. Tourism Western Australia mentions resident kangaroos and emus on the Preston Beach course, a Google review quoted by Visit Mandurah mentions kangaroos at The Cut, and the owners of Gracie & Dan's Coastal Retreat write that "kangaroos wander past at sunrise" at the house. Waroona's course sits in natural bush with seasonal wildflowers.

Give kangaroos room

Play around them rather than through them, never feed them and wait for a mob to move off the fairway before you hit.

Drive carefully at dawn and dusk

Early tee times mean driving when kangaroos are most active near roads. Slow down on Preston Beach Road and the Forrest Highway.

Follow local rules

Each club sets its own rules for wildlife, sand greens and repairing the course. Read the signs on the first tee.

Worked Example: A Three-Round Weekend For Two

Here is how the published green fees add up for two golfers staying Friday to Monday who want three 18-hole rounds without paying for anything they do not need. Prices are from each club's website on 27 October 2026.

DayCourseWhat you payTotal for two
FridayWaroona Golf Club, 18 holes (honour system)2 x $10$20
SaturdayThe Cut, 18 holes booked online (Friday to Sunday rate), plus one full cart2 x $80 + $50$210
SundayHarvey Golf Club, 18 holes, plus two hand trolleys2 x $40 + 2 x $5$90
Total green fees and hire$320 ($160 each)

Why this order? Waroona does not need a booking, so it suits an arrival day. Harvey is open to visitors all day on Sunday (book online, and a morning tee time keeps you clear of the social mixed competitions that start at 12:00 when fixtured), so it rounds off the weekend. The Cut's higher rate applies from Friday to Sunday, so if you can play it Monday to Thursday instead, the same two online rounds cost $134 rather than $160 before the cart. Walking up without booking would cost $180 for two on a Saturday.

Add a walk-over round at Preston Beach on Monday morning before the 11am check-out if the club confirms visitor play. Its fee is not published, so it is not included in the total.

Golf Plus The Rest Of The Day

A golf trip to Preston Beach is not only about golf. Once your round is done, the coast and the lakes fill the afternoon.

The beach

The Shire of Waroona says Preston Beach is one of the few places with 4WD access right along the beach, and it is a 12-minute walk from the house. Our Preston Beach swimming guide covers safe beach days and sunsets.

Yalgorup walks

The Lake Preston, Heathlands and Lake Pollard trails are all within about 12 minutes' drive. See our Yalgorup National Park walks guide.

Lake Clifton thrombolites

About 20 minutes north. Parks and Wildlife WA notes the thrombolites are harder to see when the lake is higher, and warns that contact with the lake water can be hazardous to health.

Food after golf

The Preston Beach General Store is about 3 minutes' drive away, and the Shire says the resort's bar and restaurant is open to the public seven days. Our Preston Beach food guide has the full list.

Travelling with your dog? The house welcomes one dog by approval and has a fully fenced yard. Our dog-friendly Preston Beach guide explains where dogs can and cannot go.

Why Gracie & Dan's Coastal Retreat Suits A Golf Break

For a golf trip, location is everything, and Gracie & Dan's Coastal Retreat is listed as a 2-minute walk to Preston Beach Golf Club. You can walk to your first tee with your clubs over your shoulder and walk home for lunch.

The rest of the house is set up for the way golfers actually spend a weekend:

1Parking for 5 cars: 2 in the garage and 3 on the driveway behind an electric gate, plus room for a boat or caravan, so a group can drive separately to different courses.
2Covered deck and outdoor kitchen: an undercover gas BBQ, bench and sink, with 180° views over Lake Preston and Yalgorup National Park for the post-round debrief.
3Laundry and outdoor shower: a front-loading washing machine for golf shirts and an outdoor shower for rinsing off sand after the beach.
4Cool nights and warm evenings: reverse-cycle split-system air-conditioning for hot afternoons, and an indoor wood fireplace with starter firewood for cooler spring nights.

Self check-in by lockbox from 2pm means you can play an afternoon round on the way down and still arrive whenever suits, and check-out is by 11am, which leaves time for an early nine holes on your last morning.

Who This Golf Stay Suits

The house sleeps up to 5 guests in 2 bedrooms: a queen bedroom with an ensuite, and a second bedroom with a tri-bunk (a queen bed below and a king single above) beside the second bathroom. Both bedrooms and both bathrooms are on the one level.

A golfing couple

Two players, the queen ensuite, and a different course each day, with the deck and fireplace for the evenings.

Two or three mates

Enough beds for three adults to share, a six-seat dining table and a BBQ for cooking the catch or the steaks after a round.

A family with one keen golfer

The golfer plays early while the family heads to the beach or the foreshore playground, and everyone meets back at the house for lunch. A highchair is available on request.

Linen and towels are included for every guest, along with basic toiletries, coffee pods and tea, so you only need to pack your golf gear and food.

Plan Your Golf Trip: Packing And Booking Checklist

1Your own clubs: essential for Preston Beach and Waroona. Harvey (from $20) and The Cut ($35 for a standard set, 18 holes) hire sets.
2A phone that can scan a QR code: the preferred way to pay at Waroona's honour-system desk.
3Your receipt: Harvey asks players to carry proof of payment.
4Bookings: register online at Harvey before any round, and book The Cut online for its best rates.
5Sun and water: a hat, sunscreen and more water than you think you need for November and December rounds.
6A message to the Preston Beach club: ask about visitor play before you arrive.

Most golfers drive down from Perth. The Shire of Waroona puts Preston Beach 124 km south of Perth, and Tourism Western Australia calls it a one hour and 25-minute drive. Allow a little extra, and fill up with fuel at the general store if you are heading out for an early tee time.

A Three-Day Golf Itinerary From Preston Beach

Day 1: Arrive and play Waroona

Drive down from Perth, turn inland to Waroona and play 18 holes on the sand greens for $10. Stock up at the Waroona IGA, then check in at the house from 2pm and cook on the outdoor BBQ as the lake turns gold at sunset.

Day 2: The Cut and the coast

Leave early for The Cut at Dawesville, about 40 minutes north. Play 18 holes with ocean views from more than half of them, have lunch at the clubhouse and drive back for a late swim at Preston Beach, a 12-minute walk from the house.

Day 3: Harvey and a walk-over nine

Drive under half an hour south to Harvey for a Sunday morning round, booked online. Visitors can play all day, but the clubhouse is closed on Sundays, so pack drinks and snacks. If the Preston Beach club has confirmed visitor play, walk the 2 minutes to its course for a few holes in the evening or on your last morning before the 11am check-out.
