The TSS Earnslaw is Queenstown's 1912 coal-fired steamship, and it sails a 90-minute return cruise across Lake Wakatipu (Lake Whakatipu) to Walter Peak High Country Farm. RealNZ lists the cruise from NZ$129. In November it leaves Steamer Wharf at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. Later sailings are added as summer arrives: 7pm from 23 November and 9pm from 21 December. Below: times, ticket types, the Walter Peak add-ons, the October 2026 fire, cheaper lake rides and a day plan from Fernhill, about five minutes' drive from the wharf.

Quick Answers

1How long is the cruise? 90 minutes return. The crossing to Walter Peak takes about 45 minutes each way.
2Does it run every day? RealNZ schedules it daily except during annual maintenance (18 May to 26 June in 2026). No cruise-only sailings are listed for Christmas Day.
3Can you pay cash? No. The Earnslaw, the Spirit of Queenstown and Walter Peak are all card-only.

TSS Earnslaw At A Glance

The TSS Earnslaw has been crossing Lake Wakatipu since 1912, and she still sails from Queenstown Bay most days of the year. RealNZ describes her as "the only hand-fired, commercial passenger-carrying steamship in operation in the southern hemisphere". On board you can watch the stokers shovel coal in the engine room, look through a small museum of old photographs, and have a coffee or a glass of wine at the Promenade Cafe and bar. The views take in the Remarkables, Cecil Peak and Walter Peak.

TSS Earnslaw Sailing Times For November And December 2026

RealNZ's booking calendar is the only reliable timetable, because sailings are added and removed through the season. The table below is what the calendar showed for cruise-only tickets on 28 October 2026. Walter Peak experiences use some of the same sailings and have times of their own (see the Walter Peak section below).

DatesCruise-only departures from Steamer Wharf
29 October to 22 November9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm
23 November to 20 December9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm
Wednesday 9 DecemberOnly 9am, 11am, 1pm and 3pm are listed
21 to 24 December9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm, 5pm, 7pm, 9pm
Friday 25 December (Christmas Day)No cruise-only sailings listed
From Saturday 26 December9am to 9pm, every two hours (7 sailings)

Daytime sailings take 90 minutes; the 7pm and 9pm sailings are listed at about two hours. On 28 October some of the next day's departures had already sold out, so book ahead, especially from Christmas. Times can change, so check your confirmation.

Tip: if a cruise-only sailing is full, check the Walter Peak packages for the same time. They can still have seats, and they include the return cruise.

TSS Earnslaw Prices And Ticket Types In 2026

RealNZ publishes "from" prices, which are the lowest adult fares. The fare for your date and time shows in the booking calendar once you choose a sailing. In its booking system, adults are 16 and over, children are 5 to 15 and infants are 0 to 4, and children and infants must be booked with at least one adult.

ExperienceFrom (adult, NZD)Total timeVessel
TSS Earnslaw Lake Cruise (cruise only)$1291.5 hoursTSS Earnslaw
Walter Peak Farm Tour$139About 3.5 hoursEarnslaw or Spirit of Queenstown
Walter Peak Garden to Table$169About 3.75 hoursTSS Earnslaw

Walter Peak Horse Trek$279About 3.75 hoursEarnslaw or Spirit of Queenstown
Queenstown Lake Cruise (Spirit of Queenstown)$791.5 hoursSpirit of Queenstown

Two things are easy to miss. First, some Walter Peak packages are sold on either ship, so if the steamship is the point of your trip, check that the sailing you choose says "Vintage Steamship" or TSS Earnslaw. Second, RealNZ says 1% of the price goes to conservation when you book direct on its website.

Worked example (adult from-prices, illustrative): four adults on an Earnslaw cruise-only sailing cost from 4 × NZ$129 = NZ$516. The same four on the Spirit of Queenstown Lake Cruise cost from 4 × NZ$79 = NZ$316. Child fares are lower, but RealNZ does not publish them on its pages, so check the booking calendar for your group.

What Happens On Board The TSS Earnslaw

The cruise-only sailing crosses the lake towards Walter Peak and comes back. Spend the 90 minutes like this:

The engine room

RealNZ invites you to watch "its working steam engines in the engine room". The ship is hand-fired, so you can watch the crew feed the boilers with coal while the engines turn.

The mini-museum

Historic photos show the ship's working life, when she carried sheep, cattle, mail and supplies around the lake.

The Promenade Cafe and bar

A licensed cafe serves wine, craft beer and snacks. It is card-only. If you want alcohol, bring photo ID: RealNZ's booking notes for its Queenstown Lake Cruise say anyone who looks under 30 will be asked, and international driver licences are not accepted.

The decks

Head out on deck for photos of Cecil Peak and the Remarkables. RealNZ lists a warm jacket in its what-to-bring advice, so pack one even in December.

Walter Peak High Country Farm: Which Experience To Choose

Walter Peak is a working high country farm on the far shore of the lake, settled by Europeans in the 1860s. RealNZ says that at its peak the station covered 170,000 acres and ran 40,000 sheep. The lakeside Colonel's Homestead was first built in 1902 and rebuilt in 1977 after an accidental fire. Every Walter Peak ticket includes the return cruise.

Gourmet BBQ Dining, from NZ$175

A buffet lunch or dinner of local produce cooked over a wood-fired barbecue in the Colonel's Homestead, then a sheep-shearing and farm dog demonstration and time in the lakeside gardens. RealNZ says it suits all ages. Lunch sailings leave at 11am and 1pm, and dinner at 5pm, with a 7pm dinner on some dates.

Farm Tour, from NZ$139

Meet sheep, deer, Highland cattle and alpacas, watch sheepdogs muster in the amphitheatre, then have freshly baked scones, cakes and slices in the woolshed (morning or afternoon tea, depending on the sailing). It is the lowest-priced Walter Peak option. In November and most of December it leaves at 9am, 1pm and 3pm on many days, and from 21 December at 9am and 3pm.

Garden to Table, from NZ$169

A guided tour of the restaurant garden and orchard, the chance to plant a native tree on the peninsula, then shared garden platters. It sails on the TSS Earnslaw. In December the calendar shows it at 3pm.

Horse Trek, from NZ$279

An easy guided 40-minute ride up to a lake and mountain lookout, suited to first-time and novice riders, followed by morning or afternoon tea. Riders must be at least 7 years old and 120 cm tall, and weigh no more than 95 kg. RealNZ may weigh riders on the day. Helmets and wet weather gear are provided.

How to choose: barbecue for a meal, farm tour for animal-loving children, Garden to Table for gardens and food, and the horse trek only if riding is the highlight, as it costs about double the farm tour.

Walter Peak After The October 2026 Fire

On 6 October 2026 a vegetation fire flared up on Walter Peak Station. 1News reported that it had reignited from a planned burn the previous week. By that evening it had grown to 390 hectares, and Fire and Emergency said its efforts to protect the homestead and nearby buildings had succeeded. Local news site The Gist reported that RealNZ "evacuated guests, contractors and staff to the amphitheatre and cancelled tours", and that the fire was later fully contained after reaching 1,350 hectares (other outlets reported about 1,400).

Here is what that means for a November or December trip. RealNZ has not published a separate reopening notice, but on 28 October 2026 its booking calendar had Walter Peak barbecue, farm tour and horse trek sailings on sale for that day and every day ahead, so the experiences are running. With so much of the station burned, parts of the slopes may look different from older photos. If you are booking a long way ahead, check the date again a few days before you go.

Million Dollar Cruise details come from its Tourism New Zealand listing, because the operator's own website blocked our check on 28 October 2026. Confirm its prices and times when you book. That listing says "Well-behaved dogs allowed", which matters if your dog is travelling with you (see below).

Getting To Steamer Wharf From Fernhill

Steamer Wharf is on Beach Street in central Queenstown, and the Sarahs Scenic Stay listing puts both the RealNZ Visitor Centre and the Earnslaw departure point about 5 minutes away by car. That short drive is the easy part. Parking in town is the hard part.

  • Driving: RealNZ advises allowing an extra 30 minutes to find a park. There is no dedicated Earnslaw parking. The Man Street and Church Street parking buildings are paid, and RealNZ also mentions free, limited parking along the Lake Esplanade.
  • Bus: Orbus Route 1 runs between Sunshine Bay and the Remarkables Shops through central Queenstown about every 15 minutes from 6:02am to 8:01pm, then about every 30 minutes until 12:25am, every day. A Bee Card fare is NZ$2.50 for adults and NZ$1.50 for ages 5 to 18, and cash is NZ$4. Under-fives ride free. The listing notes public transport nearby. Use the Orbus journey planner to find your closest stop.
  • Taxi or chauffeur: the listing says a chauffeur and an airport shuttle are available on request, which helps for a dinner sailing when nobody wants to drive home.

With a group of eight, drop everyone at the wharf first, then park and walk back.

The Orbus Ferry: A Cheap Ride On Lake Wakatipu

The Orbus ferry is not a sightseeing cruise. It is public transport across the Frankton Arm, and it is one of the cheapest ways to spend time on the lake. The Otago Regional Council lists stops at Queenstown Bay, Bayview, the Marina and the Hilton, with sailings "Hourly from 8.45am until 10.05pm" from Queenstown and half-hourly services being trialled at peak times. A single trip costs NZ$10 with a Bee Card or NZ$14 by bank card, for everyone aged 5 and over. Under-fives are free, and there are no ferry concessions.

Pair it with the Earnslaw: steamship in the morning, then the ferry to the Hilton side for lunch and a lakefront walk. Four adults pay 4 × NZ$10 = NZ$40 each way with Bee Cards.

Best Time Of Day: Twilight Sailings And Sunsets

Summer evenings in Queenstown are long, and the late sailings make the most of them. The US Naval Observatory calculator gives these Queenstown sunset times:

DateSunsetEnd of civil twilightMatching Earnslaw sailing
Sunday 15 November 20268:54pm9:28pm5pm (back about 6:30pm), no evening sailing yet
Tuesday 1 December 20269:14pm9:51pm7pm sailing, back about 9pm, shortly before sunset
Monday 21 December 20269:32pm10:09pm9pm sailing leaves about half an hour before sunset

The morning sailings have their own advantage: you still have the afternoon free. If you are travelling with children, choose 9am or 11am and keep the evening for a barbecue on the balcony at home.

RealNZ gives a rough temperature guide of 9 to 15°C for spring (September to November) and 19 to 29°C for summer (December to February). It also notes that alpine weather can change quickly. Pack a jacket whatever the forecast says.

The TSS Earnslaw With Kids

RealNZ describes the lake cruise as "suitable for all ages", and there is plenty for children: a real steamship, a coal-fired engine room, and a farm full of animals at the far end. Here is what to know before you go:

  • Ages and fares: child fares cover ages 5 to 15 and infant fares ages 0 to 4. Children and infants must be booked with at least one adult.
  • Best ticket for families: the Walter Peak Farm Tour, with sheepdogs, animals and a woolshed tea, costs NZ$10 more per adult than cruise-only at from-prices (NZ$139 against NZ$129).
  • Stairs: RealNZ says the Earnslaw has steps and narrow stairs between decks, so a small child carrier is easier than a big pram.

Back at the apartment, the listing includes a porta cot, a feeding chair, a baby gate, a play mat and some surprise toys for children, which makes the rest of the day easier.

Accessibility, Dogs And The Practical Rules

Accessibility: both RealNZ boats are boarded by ramp, but RealNZ's pages differ on how accessible they are. One FAQ calls the Earnslaw and the Spirit of Queenstown wheelchair accessible. Another says "neither vessel is fully wheelchair accessible", because the Earnslaw has stairs between decks. RealNZ also says neither boat has an accessible toilet. At Walter Peak, RealNZ says the barbecue restaurant is designed for limited mobility, but the path from the wharf is an inclined gravel track. The Farm Tour uses gravel paths that unaided wheelchair users cannot manage, and Garden to Table is not suitable for wheelchair users. RealNZ asks you to tell it about your needs when you book.

Dogs: RealNZ's Earnslaw pages do not mention pets, so ask before you bring one. Sarahs Scenic Stay welcomes one crate-trained dog, and the listing says dogs may be left alone in the apartment for up to 4 hours when crated. A 90-minute cruise fits easily within that. A 3.5 to 4-hour Walter Peak trip plus travel time probably does not. The Million Dollar Cruise listing allows well-behaved dogs.

A Short History Of The Lady Of The Lake

New Zealand Railways commissioned the TSS Earnslaw to serve the farming communities around Lake Wakatipu. RealNZ says she was launched in the same year as the Titanic and made her maiden voyage on 18 October 1912. At 48 metres long she was the biggest boat on the lake, and she carried passengers, sheep, cattle, mail and supplies, linking isolated farming communities with the outside world.

She was nearly scrapped in 1968, and was then bought and restored by RealNZ and returned to passenger service. RealNZ says everything you see is "pretty much like it was 100 years ago". She has also been in films: a cameo as an Amazon river boat in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and parts of the trawler in Peter Jackson's King Kong were inspired by her. Walter Peak's own story goes back to Māori travellers who camped in its sheltered bays on moa-hunting and pounamu-gathering journeys to the Mararoa and Ōreti rivers.

Christmas, New Year And School Holidays On The Lake

Three dates matter this summer. New Zealand's Term 4 ends no later than Friday 18 December 2026, so school-age families can travel from then. The 9pm sailings start on Monday 21 December. On Friday 25 December, RealNZ's calendar lists no cruise-only sailings and no Spirit of Queenstown lake cruise, but it does list Walter Peak barbecue sailings at 11am and 1pm marked "Christmas Lunch". If you want Christmas lunch by the lake that someone else cooks, book it early.

For New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December, the calendar shows the usual seven sailings from 9am to 9pm, plus barbecue dinner sailings at 5pm and 7pm. RealNZ had no separate New Year's Eve cruise on sale when we checked. From Boxing Day the full summer timetable runs every day.

Why Sarahs Scenic Stay Works For A TSS Earnslaw Day

The listing puts Steamer Wharf and the RealNZ Visitor Centre about 5 minutes away by car, and the apartment looks over the same lake and mountains you will see from the Earnslaw's deck.

  • Room for eight: 4 bedrooms with 8 beds across a 130 m² layout. The two super king beds can be split into singles if you ask at least two weeks ahead.
  • Two balconies with mountain and lake views: the lounge balcony has a small table and four seats, and the main bedroom has its own balcony with seating for two, which suits a slow morning coffee before an 11am sailing.
  • Easy dinners after a late sailing: Lokal Kitchen and Bar and Chur Fish and Chips are each about a 1-minute walk away, and there is a dairy below the apartment for milk and snacks.
  • A full kitchen for a group: induction stove, oven, Nespresso machine, rice cooker, SodaStream and an 8-seat dining table, plus a portable Weber barbecue you can take on a picnic.
  • A local host: Sarah is also a tour guide, and a private chef, babysitter or chauffeur can be arranged on request.
  • Practical extras: self check-in with a smart lock from 3pm, a washer and dryer, a heat pump in each bedroom, and one crate-trained dog welcome.

See the photos and dates on the Sarahs Scenic Stay listing.

How A Group Of Eight Can Split A Lake Day

Three ways to plan it:

Three generations: the grandparents and young children take the 11am cruise-only sailing and are home for an afternoon rest. The older children and parents book the 1pm Walter Peak Farm Tour (listed until 20 December; after that, choose 3pm). Everyone meets on the balcony at 6pm for a barbecue.

Friends celebrating: book the 5pm Walter Peak barbecue dinner for the whole group, then take a taxi back to Fernhill. With a sunset at about 9:14pm on 1 December, you sail home in the last of the light.

Two families on a budget: ride the Spirit of Queenstown Lake Cruise from NZ$79 per adult, then fish and chips from downstairs that night.

Booking tip: RealNZ asks groups who want to sit together at the Walter Peak restaurant to contact guest services at least 24 hours ahead.

A Fernhill To Walter Peak Day Plan

8:00am: Breakfast on the balcony

Coffee from the Nespresso machine on the lounge balcony, and pack the jackets and sunscreen.

8:20am: Leave for town

Allow about 5 minutes for the drive and up to 30 minutes for parking, or catch the Route 1 bus.

8:40am: Check in at Steamer Wharf

Collect your boarding passes at least 20 minutes before departure from the RealNZ team in front of the ship or at the Visitor Centre.

9:00am: Sail on the TSS Earnslaw

For the 9am Walter Peak Farm Tour, you cross in about 45 minutes, meet the animals, watch the sheepdogs and have morning tea, and you are back about 12:30pm. For the 9am cruise only, you are back about 10:30am.

12:30pm: Lunch on the waterfront

Eat in town, or catch the Orbus ferry from Queenstown Bay to the Hilton side for a lakefront walk.

Afternoon: Rest, then a short walk

Head home for a rest. In the late afternoon, take a short walk on the Fernhill tracks (see our Fernhill walking tracks guide).

Evening: Dinner close to home

Use the portable Weber on the balcony, or walk one minute to Lokal Kitchen and Bar.

Booking Tips And What To Pack For A Lake Cruise

  • Book direct with RealNZ for the live calendar, clear vessel names and the 1% conservation donation. Compare the same date, ship and inclusions if you look at reseller sites.
  • Check which ship you are on. Some Walter Peak packages come in steamship and catamaran versions.
  • Book Walter Peak earlier than cruise-only. The farm and restaurant have limited space, and RealNZ recommends booking in advance.
  • Pack layers. RealNZ suggests a warm jacket, non-slip shoes, sunscreen and sunglasses, a camera and any personal medication.
  • Bring photo ID if you want a drink on board, and a card, because the boats are cashless.

FAQs About The TSS Earnslaw

How much is the TSS Earnslaw cruise in 2026?

RealNZ lists the 90-minute TSS Earnslaw cruise from NZ$129 per adult (checked 28 October 2026). Walter Peak packages that include the return cruise start at NZ$139 for the Farm Tour, NZ$169 for Garden to Table, NZ$175 for the Gourmet BBQ and NZ$279 for the Horse Trek. Child fares cover ages 5 to 15.

What times does the TSS Earnslaw leave Queenstown?

From late October, RealNZ's calendar shows cruise-only sailings at 9am, 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. A 7pm sailing is added from 23 November and a 9pm sailing from 21 December, giving seven sailings a day through summer. No cruise-only sailings are listed on Christmas Day. Always check the live calendar when you book.

How long is the TSS Earnslaw cruise?

The cruise-only trip is 90 minutes return, across the lake towards Walter Peak and back. The crossing takes about 45 minutes each way on the Earnslaw. Walter Peak experiences take about 3.5 to 4 hours in total, and the evening sailings in summer are listed at about two hours.

Can you get off the TSS Earnslaw at Walter Peak?

RealNZ sells the cruise as a 90-minute return trip and suggests pre-booking a Walter Peak experience if you want time on the farm. Every Walter Peak package, such as the Farm Tour, the Gourmet BBQ, Garden to Table or the Horse Trek, includes the return cruise and time ashore at the farm.

Is Walter Peak open after the October 2026 fire?

Yes. A vegetation fire on Walter Peak Station on 6 October 2026 led RealNZ to evacuate guests and cancel that day's tours, and the homestead was protected. On 28 October 2026, RealNZ's booking calendar had barbecue, farm tour and horse trek sailings on sale every day ahead. Check again before your date.

Where does the TSS Earnslaw leave from, and where do I park?

It leaves from the RealNZ Visitor Centre at Steamer Wharf, 88 Beach Street, Queenstown. There is no dedicated parking. RealNZ suggests the paid Man Street and Church Street buildings or limited free parking along the Lake Esplanade, and allowing an extra 30 minutes. From Fernhill the drive is about 5 minutes.

Is the TSS Earnslaw good for kids and babies?

RealNZ says the lake cruise suits all ages. Infant fares cover ages 0 to 4 and child fares ages 5 to 15, and children must be booked with an adult. Children can watch the working engine room. The ship has narrow stairs between decks, so a carrier is easier than a large pram.

Does the TSS Earnslaw run on Christmas Day?

RealNZ's calendar for Friday 25 December 2026 shows no cruise-only sailings and no Spirit of Queenstown lake cruise. It does show Walter Peak Gourmet BBQ sailings at 11am and 1pm, marked "Christmas Lunch". Normal summer sailings, every two hours from 9am to 9pm, resume on Boxing Day.

Show 2 more questionsShow fewer questions
Can I take my dog on a Queenstown lake cruise?

RealNZ's Earnslaw pages do not mention pets, so ask before booking. Tourism New Zealand's listing for the Million Dollar Cruise says well-behaved dogs are allowed. If you stay at Sarahs Scenic Stay, one crate-trained dog is welcome, and the listing allows dogs to be left crated for up to 4 hours.

Is the TSS Earnslaw worth it?

If you want a piece of living history, yes. It is the only Queenstown cruise where you can watch a hand-fired steam engine at work. If you mainly want views for less, the NZ$79 Spirit of Queenstown or Million Dollar Cruise suits, and the NZ$10 Orbus ferry is the cheapest way onto the lake.
