Skyline Queenstown Gondola And Luge Guide: Prices, Hours And Kids' Rules

Skyline Queenstown is the gondola that lifts you from Brecon Street to the top of Bob's Peak, where the luge, a buffet restaurant, a cafe and a 220-degree panorama over Lake Wakatipu and the mountains are waiting. When we checked on 19 October 2026, a gondola-only ticket was listed at NZ$69 for adults and the gondola plus three luge rides at NZ$99, with the gondola running 9:30am to 9pm. This guide covers prices, hours, kids' luge rules, booking tips and how to get there from Fernhill, about five minutes away by taxi.
Key Takeaway
Skyline Queenstown works as a half-day outing or a long evening. Ride the gondola up Bob's Peak, do three or more luge runs, eat at the top if you have booked, and stay on for the evening views in late spring. Prices and hours change, so confirm them on Skyline's site the week you go.

What Is Skyline Queenstown?
Skyline Queenstown is a gondola and hilltop attraction on Bob's Peak, above central Queenstown. The gondola base is on Brecon Street, and Skyline says the ride takes you 480m up over Lake Wakatipu to the top of Bob's Peak.
At the top you will find the luge tracks and chairlift, the Stratosfare buffet restaurant, Skyline Cafe & Bar, the Baked & Fresh bakery and a Gelato Bar, viewing areas, and the newer Vortex Slide. Skyline lists the outlook as Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Walter Peak, Cecil Peak and the town itself, and describes the gondola as "the steepest cable car lift in the Southern Hemisphere".
Several other businesses also operate from the summit: AJ Hackett's Ledge Bungy and Ledge Swing, GForce Paragliding tandem flights and Ziptrek Ecotours ziplines. Skyline says these are run independently, so they are booked and priced separately.
Skyline Queenstown Prices For Spring 2026
Skyline sells the gondola on its own or bundled with luge rides, dining or both. These are the prices on Skyline Queenstown's own pricing pages when we checked on 19 October 2026. They are in New Zealand dollars and can change, so confirm the total at checkout.
| Ticket | Adult (15+) | Child (6–14) |
|---|---|---|
| Gondola only | NZ$69 | NZ$48 |
| Gondola + 3 luge rides | NZ$99 | NZ$68 |
| Gondola + 5 luge rides | NZ$104 | NZ$72 |
| Gondola + 6 luge rides | NZ$106 | NZ$74 |
| Gondola + unlimited luge rides | NZ$140 | NZ$96 |
| Gondola + dinner | NZ$162 | NZ$113 |
| Gondola + dinner + 3 luge rides | NZ$193 | NZ$135 |
Skyline defines an adult as 15 and over, a child as 6 to 14, and a pre-schooler as 2 to 5. Children under 6 can ride the luge in tandem with a paying adult; Skyline lists "$5 for tandem rides", and these tickets are bought on site.
Family luge packages are also listed. For the gondola plus three luge rides each, Skyline shows NZ$249 for a family of three, NZ$264 for a family of four and NZ$320 for a family of five. Check which family make-up each package covers before you book.
Skyline Queenstown Opening Hours And Last Rides
Skyline says it is "Open daily year-round, until late." These were the hours shown for Monday 19 October 2026. The closing time means different things for different parts of the site, which matters when you are planning a late visit.
| What | Hours shown | What the closing time means |
|---|---|---|
| Gondola | 9:30am–9pm | Last boarding up; Skyline allows one hour at the top after it |
| Luge | 10am–9pm | Last time to start a run |
| Stratosfare Restaurant & Bar | 11:45am–8:45pm | Last seating; diners get 1.5 hours |
| Skyline Cafe & Bar | 9:30am–9:30pm | Closing time; walk-in, no bookings |
| Mountain bike uplift | 10am–6pm | Gondola uplift for mountain bikers |
Skyline adds that hours may vary with weather, maintenance or construction. Check the opening-hours page on the day, particularly if your plan depends on a late luge run or a dinner booking.
One seasonal change matters for anyone coming in November or December. Skyline lists its stargazing tour as a seasonal product open March to October. A November or December trip will probably miss it, so check before you promise it to the kids.
What Is The Luge? Queenstown's Two Tracks Explained
A luge is a gravity-powered cart that you steer and brake yourself as it rolls downhill on a purpose-built track. Skyline sums it up as part go-kart, part toboggan. At Skyline Queenstown, the luge winds through "1,600 meters of banked corners, tunnels and dippers", and a chairlift carries you and your cart back to the start.
There are two tracks. Skyline describes the Arrow Track as "a leisurely ride with a gentle gradient" and the Dart Track as "a steeper gradient with banked corners, tunnels, dippers, and cuttings". Skyline does not set an order, but starting on the Arrow to learn how the cart behaves, then moving to the Dart once you trust the brakes, is a sensible plan.
The controls are simple. Skyline's instructions are to pull back on the handlebars to slow or stop and release them to speed up. Every rider gets a safety briefing and a brake check before the first run, footwear must be worn at all times, and feet stay inside the cart.
Queenstown Luge Age And Height Rules For Kids
The rules have two parts, age and height. These are Skyline's rules as checked on 19 October 2026.
| Rider | Rule |
|---|---|
| Riding alone | At least 6 years old and 110cm tall |
| Riding tandem with an adult | Aged 2+ and over 85cm |
| Tandem fee | Listed as "$5 for tandem rides" for children under 6, bought on site |
| Infants | Cannot ride the luge or the chairlift |
| Vortex Slide | 6 years or older and at least 110cm; no tandem; NZ$5 per ride |
Skyline says tandem rides are only for adults and small children, so two adults cannot share a cart. For guests unable to ride solo, Skyline says a truck and trailer cart option may be available; ask the luge staff on the day.
Measure at home before promising anyone their own cart.
How Many Luge Rides Should You Buy?
Skyline's own advice is "We recommend 3+ rides for the ultimate Luge experience." It also says "An average Luge ride takes 15 minutes", so three rides is roughly 45 minutes on the luge and six rides roughly 90 minutes, before you add time on the viewing decks.
The price steps between packages are small at the low end. On the adult prices listed on 19 October 2026, six rides cost NZ$7 more than three rides, and unlimited rides cost NZ$34 more than six. Unlimited luge is not offered during peak holiday periods, so do not build a plan around it for school holidays.
Worked example: two adults and two children (illustrative)
Using Skyline's listed prices for the gondola plus three luge rides each:
| Option | Sum | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Separate tickets | 2 × NZ$99 + 2 × NZ$68 | NZ$334 |
| Family of 4 package as listed | One package price | NZ$264 |
| Difference | NZ$334 − NZ$264 | NZ$70 |
That gap is worth confirming at checkout. Skyline's page does not spell out which mix of adults and children counts as a family, so read the package description before you pay.
The session rule
Luge tickets come with a session time. Skyline asks you to arrive at the base gondola terminal at least 45 minutes before that session. You only need to complete your first ride within your allocated 30-minute session, and all rides on one ticket must be used the same day. If weather closes the luge for a while, affected tickets are moved to the next available session.
Stratosfare Restaurant And Eating At The Top
Stratosfare is Skyline's buffet restaurant at the top of the gondola. Skyline describes "an all-you-can-eat buffet with seasonal dishes, local produce, and a variety of vegetarian and gluten-free options", and each booking includes the return gondola ride. Tell the team about allergies or dietary needs when you book.
Skyline's FAQ gives lunch from 11:45am to 12:45pm and dinner from 4:30pm to 8:45pm, while the opening-hours panel shows 11:45am to 8:45pm, so pick your sitting on the booking page. Diners get 1.5 hours at the table.
Premium Dining gets you a window table and a house drink. Those window tables are reached by stairs only, so choose standard seating if anyone in the group cannot manage stairs. The upper deck of Stratosfare is reachable by lift.
When To Go: Late-Spring Evenings, Weather And Crowds
Late October to mid-December is a good window for Skyline Queenstown. The evenings are getting longer, the gondola runs until 9pm and the luge takes its last starters at 9pm, so you can fit a visit after a day on the lake or the trails.
Skyline recommends booking "especially during weekends and holidays". If you have flexibility, a weekday morning or late afternoon is easier for families, and an evening visit suits couples and groups who want dinner and the lights of town below.
Queenstown's spring weather changes quickly. Even on a warm day in town, Bob's Peak can feel cooler and windier, especially once the sun drops behind the hills. Check the MetService forecast for Queenstown on the morning of your visit. Bring a warm layer and sunscreen, wear closed shoes (footwear is compulsory on the luge), and mount any GoPro securely, as Skyline requires.
Project Skyline: What The Building Work Means For Your Visit
Skyline Queenstown is partway through a major redevelopment called Project Skyline. According to Skyline, the new 10-seat gondola cabins and the multi-storey car park are complete, the new base terminal and ticketing systems are operating, and the first phase of the new top complex extension is finished.
The old top complex is now being taken down and rebuilt, with full completion "expected in early 2029". Skyline says the gondola, luge, Skyline Cafe & Bar and Stratosfare are all open, but some areas may be fenced off, and the luge page notes that some areas are temporarily accessed via scaffolding.
In practice, expect signage and a few detours at the top, and treat older blog posts about four-person cabins or old parking as out of date. Each new cabin seats up to 10, and tickets are sold per ride, so you may share a cabin at busy times.
Getting From Fernhill To The Skyline Gondola
Fernhill sits on the hillside west of central Queenstown, and the gondola base on Brecon Street is close. The WTP listing for Sarahs Scenic Stay puts the Skyline Queenstown Gondola and Luge about a five-minute taxi ride away and central Queenstown about a five-minute drive.
The car park uses number-plate recognition; scan a valid Skyline ticket at the pay station for the discount, then pay the balance. Parking is limited at peak times, so a taxi or the bus can be easier on a summer weekend.
Destination Queenstown says Route 1 runs into central Queenstown, and Skyline suggests walking from town when parking is busy. Check current fares, the Bee Card and timetables with Orbus before you travel.
Cyclists can use the free bike racks at the front of Skyline. If you are riding the Queenstown Bike Park rather than just visiting, our Queenstown mountain biking guide from Fernhill covers the uplift and trails in detail.
Walking Up Instead: The Tiki Trail And Ben Lomond
Yes, you can walk up to Skyline Queenstown. The Tiki Trail starts at the gondola base and finishes at the Skyline complex. Skyline describes it as "a moderate to advanced track with a 400m+ elevation gain" and allows about 1 to 1.5 hours.
It is a steep climb, so it suits fit walkers who want to earn the view. Plan how you will come down before you set off: walk back the same way, or check Skyline's current ticket options if you would rather ride the gondola down.
For a bigger day, the Ben Lomond Track is a much longer mountain walk in the same area. Mountain weather changes quickly, so it deserves its own planning and a check of the forecast and track conditions before you set out. Our Fernhill walking tracks guide covers the Tiki Trail, Ben Lomond, One Mile Creek and Sunshine Bay with spring conditions in mind.
Bigger Thrills At The Top Of Bob's Peak
Once you are on Bob's Peak, several adrenaline activities sit within a short walk of the gondola. Skyline says they are operated independently, so contact each company for prices, age and weight limits and whether your gondola ride is included.
For mixed groups, book the thrill-seekers' slot first, then fit the luge session and meal around it.
Prams, Wheelchairs And Pets At Skyline
Skyline has made the gondola easy to board. The gondola cabins are flush to the boarding platform and can be slowed or stopped for easy boarding. Skyline says prams and strollers are welcome and fit inside the cabin, wheelchairs can be accommodated, and most of the upper complex is accessible, including toilets and Stratosfare's upper deck via a lift.
Mobility Parking Permit holders are asked to contact Skyline after booking to arrange drop-off access, and anyone with specific access needs should call ahead while construction continues at the top.
Pets are not allowed on the gondola or in the Skyline complex, although service animals are permitted. That matters for guests travelling with a dog. Sarahs Scenic Stay welcomes one crate-trained dog, and the listing says dogs may be left alone in the apartment for up to four hours when crated. Plan a Skyline visit inside that window, and take the dog on a Fernhill walk before you go.
Why Sarahs Scenic Stay Suits A Skyline Queenstown Trip
Sarahs Scenic Stay is a 130-square-metre, four-bedroom apartment in Fernhill that sleeps eight, with mountain and lake outlooks from two balconies. For a Skyline trip, its main advantage is distance: the gondola is about a five-minute taxi ride away, so you can go up for a morning luge session, come back for lunch and a rest, and head up again in the evening without a long drive.
The apartment sits above a restaurant, a fish and chip shop and a dairy, which makes the post-luge dinner easy. If the group skips the Stratosfare buffet, Lokal Kitchen & Bar and Chur Fish and Chips are each listed as a one-minute walk away.
Sarah, the host, is also a tour guide, and the listing offers a tour guide, airport shuttle and babysitter on request, handy if the adults want a later dinner at the top.
Where Sarahs Scenic Stay fits a Skyline Queenstown trip
Sarahs Scenic Stay is a four-bedroom Fernhill apartment for up to eight guests, about a five-minute taxi from the Skyline Queenstown gondola. Go up for a morning luge session, come home for lunch on the balcony, then head back up for the evening views.
The apartment sits above a restaurant, a fish and chip shop and a dairy, so dinner after the luge is easy. Families get a porta cot, baby gate and feeding chair, and one crate-trained dog is welcome and can stay crated in the apartment for up to four hours while you are up the mountain.

How A Group Of Eight Can Plan A Skyline Day From The Apartment
Not everyone in a group of eight will want the same day. The layout helps: four bedrooms, each with an air-conditioner or heat pump, an open-plan lounge, kitchen and eight-seat dining area, and a private balcony off the lounge with a small table and four seats.
Worked example: a mixed group of eight (illustrative)
Four adults and two children aged 8 and 11 want the luge. Two grandparents want the view only.
| Who | Ticket | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 4 adults | Gondola + 3 luge, 4 × NZ$99 | NZ$396 |
| 2 children | Gondola + 3 luge, 2 × NZ$68 | NZ$136 |
| 2 grandparents | Gondola only, 2 × NZ$69 | NZ$138 |
| Total | Listed prices, 19 October 2026 | NZ$670 |
Two taxis from Fernhill keep the group together. The grandparents can sit at the cafe while the others ride, then everyone meets back at the apartment for a barbecue on the portable Weber.
Families with small children will find the practical extras in the listing useful: a porta cot with foam mattress, baby gate, feeding chair, play mat and surprise children's toys. The washing machine and dryer help after a dusty Tiki Trail climb.
A Two-Night Skyline And Fernhill Plan

Book the Stratosfare lunch sitting, or have a cafe snack and head back to Fernhill for an afternoon rest.
Day 2 Evening: Back Up For The Views
If you bought the 3 Day Unlimited Gondola Upgrade, return in the evening for the view over the lake and the town lights. Last boarding is listed as 9pm, so leave the apartment with time to spare.

Child prices ran from NZ$68 to NZ$96. Unlimited luge is not available during peak holiday periods, according to Skyline's pricing page.

What is the age and height limit for the Queenstown luge?
Children must be at least 6 years old and 110cm tall to ride alone. Children aged 2 and over who are taller than 85cm can ride in tandem with a responsible adult, and Skyline lists tandem rides for under-6s at NZ$5, bought on site. Infants cannot ride the luge or the chairlift.
What time does Skyline Queenstown open and close?
On 19 October 2026, Skyline showed the gondola running 9:30am to 9pm and the luge 10am to 9pm. The gondola time is the last boarding up, and the luge time is the last time to start a run. Stratosfare's last seating was 8:45pm. Skyline says hours can vary with weather, maintenance or construction.
Can you walk up to Skyline Queenstown?
Yes. The Tiki Trail starts at the gondola base on Brecon Street and finishes at the Skyline complex on Bob's Peak. Skyline describes it as a moderate to advanced track with more than 400m of elevation gain and allows about 1 to 1.5 hours. Wear proper footwear and carry water, as it climbs steadily.
Where do you park for Skyline Queenstown?
Skyline's multi-storey car park sits directly behind the gondola base terminal and has 297 public spaces, including 10 accessible spaces. Entry uses number-plate recognition, and scanning a valid Skyline ticket at the pay station gives a discount. Parking is limited at peak times, so a taxi or Orbus can be easier.
Can you take a dog or a pram on the Queenstown gondola?
Prams and strollers are welcome and fit inside the gondola cabins, which load flush with the platform. Pets are not allowed on the gondola or in the Skyline complex, though service animals are permitted. Guests with a dog at Sarahs Scenic Stay can leave one crate-trained dog in the apartment for up to four hours.

Yes. Skyline says reservations are essential, especially in peak season and on weekends. Bookings include the return gondola ride, and diners get 1.5 hours at the buffet. Premium Dining adds a window table and a house drink, but those window tables are reached by stairs only, so check access needs first.
How far is Skyline Queenstown from Fernhill?
The WTP listing for Sarahs Scenic Stay puts the Skyline Queenstown Gondola and Luge about a five-minute taxi ride from Fernhill. Orbus Route 1 also serves Fernhill and Sunshine Bay and runs into central Queenstown.
