Moruya Heads Food And Markets Guide

Moruya Markets And Food Guide: Saturday Stalls, SAGE And Local Eats

Moruya has two markets worth planning a stay around. The Moruya Country Market runs every Saturday from 8am to 12:30pm at Riverside Park on the Moruya River, and the SAGE Farmers Market sets up in the same park every Tuesday from 3pm. Both sit in Moruya town, a short drive from the beaches at Moruya Heads. This guide covers what each market sells, the dog rules, which cafes, pubs and restaurants open on which days, and how to turn a market haul into an easy group dinner back at the beach house.

Key Takeaway

Arrive at the Saturday Moruya Country Market early, between 8am and 9am, for the widest choice of produce and baked goods. If your stay includes a Tuesday, the SAGE Farmers Market from 3pm is the place for local vegetables, meat, eggs and seafood. Moruya's dining is spread across the week, so check which venues open on your nights before you rely on them.

Before Market Day

A few quick checks make the morning easier.

1 Confirm it is on: Check each organiser's website or social media pages, as listed times can change.
2 Pack bags and a cooler: Bring reusable bags, plus an esky if you plan to buy meat, seafood or dairy.
3 Decide on the dog: Riverside Park allows dogs on leash, but SAGE asks shoppers to consider leaving pets at home.

Make The Food Week Work

Moruya's opening hours are uneven, so plan ahead.

1 Book dinners early: The River serves dinner Thursday to Saturday only.
2 Use Quantum's hours: The brewery opens Thursday to Sunday from midday.
3 Cook on quiet nights: Monday to Wednesday suit a market-produce dinner at the house.

Moruya Markets At A Glance: Days, Times And Location

Both of Moruya's regular markets are held at Riverside Park, a riverside reserve in the middle of Moruya town. They are very different. The Saturday market is a big, busy country market with produce, food, crafts and second-hand finds. The Tuesday market is a smaller farmers market focused on food grown or harvested in the region.

Market When Where Best for
Moruya Country Market Every Saturday, 8am–12:30pm Riverside Park, Moruya Produce, baked treats, coffee, crafts, plants, browsing with kids
SAGE Farmers Market Every Tuesday, from 3pm (tourism listings show 3pm–5pm) Riverside Park, Moruya Vegetables, fruit, meat, eggs, seafood and other local food for cooking

The NSW Government events listing for the Country Market shows weekly Saturday sessions running through to 6 February 2027, so the market continues through spring and the summer holidays. Entry is free. The listing asks visitors to check with the organiser for the latest times.

Saturday is the market for browsing. Tuesday is the market for cooking.

Moruya Country Market: Saturday Mornings On The Riverbank

The Moruya Country Market has been running for more than 35 years, according to the organisers. It is a not-for-profit owned and run by its stallholders, and the market says all profits go to local, domestic and international charities, local sporting groups and community events.

It is also big. Eurobodalla Coast Tourism describes more than 130 stallholders, and the market itself says it can host up to 150 stalls at once. The organisers group stalls into arts and crafts, collectables, fashion and jewellery, food and beverages, garden, health and beauty, produce, and services and entertainment. The NSW events listing adds homemade preserves, baked treats, pre-loved books and bric-a-brac.

Riverside Park also works well for families. Eurobodalla Coast Tourism lists a children's playground with a flying fox, public toilets, parking, wide concrete paths and open areas to sit. The tourism page also mentions busking musicians.

How To Shop The Saturday Market Without Missing The Good Stuff

Country markets reward early arrivals. The widest choice of produce and baked goods is usually early, and parking tends to be easier before the mid-morning crowd. Aim for 8am to 9am if food shopping is the priority.

Do a full lap before buying, note two or three produce stalls and one for bread or cakes, then circle back.

Split jobs in a bigger group. One person buys fruit and vegetables, another finds bread and breakfast items, and the kids get a small budget for a treat or a second-hand book. Meet at the playground at a set time.

Bring a card and some cash, reusable bags and a cooler bag. As the weather warms, buy perishables last, keep seafood and meat cold and get them into the fridge as soon as you are back. Pack hats, sunscreen and water for open parkland.

A simple Saturday market order Coffee first, then a browsing lap, then produce and bread, then crafts and second-hand finds. Leave anything perishable until last.

SAGE Farmers Market: Tuesday Afternoons For Local Produce

The SAGE Farmers Market is built for a weekly food shop. SAGE says the market is held every Tuesday afternoon at Riverside Park and "starts at 3pm with the ringing of the bell." Eurobodalla Coast Tourism lists it as 3pm to 5pm and calls it a more intimate alternative to the busy Saturday market.

SAGE describes it as a marketplace for locally grown or harvested food. Producers named on its website include Old Mill Road BioFarm for vegetables, fruit and herbs, Egan's Farm for free-range eggs and grass-fed Angus beef, McAsh Oysters from the Clyde River, and Narooma Seafood Direct for fish such as snapper and flathead. Stallholders can change from week to week.

The market is reliable. SAGE's FAQs say it goes ahead in rain and is cancelled only for extreme weather, such as catastrophic fire danger, and that it has only ever been cancelled twice. Stalls accept card and cash.

For a holiday group, Tuesday is the ideal restock. Arrive close to 3pm and shop for the next two dinners: oysters for that evening, fish or beef for the barbecue, salad greens and eggs for breakfast.

Be there for the bell at 3pm if you want first pick of the seafood and meat.

Getting From Moruya Heads To Riverside Park

Moruya Heads is the beach and river-mouth end of Moruya. Both markets, the brewery, the main restaurant and the pubs and clubs in this guide are in Moruya town, so plan to drive in rather than walk.

The drive is short. NSW National Parks' directions to the Moruya Heads lookout follow Moruya South Head Road for about 6 km from the Princes Highway, and the WTP listing for Bertie's 3 Beaches puts Quantum Brewery in town about 11 minutes' drive away. Riverside Park is in central Moruya beside the river, so allow roughly 10–15 minutes from the Heads, plus time to park on a busy Saturday.

The market's website mentions plenty of off-street parking. If the group wants a drink with dinner in town, the club courtesy buses covered below are worth knowing about.

Dogs At The Moruya Markets: What The Rules Say

SAGE's market policies say Riverside Park is "an on-leash dog-friendly park as determined by the Eurobodalla Shire Council," and that the market committee has no authority to allow or disallow dogs at the market. They also say "a farmers market is a food market and therefore the presence of animals is not appropriate within the market precinct," and ask customers to "consider leaving their companion animals at home." Service animals are exempt.

The Moruya Country Market's own pages do not set out a dog policy. If your dog comes to either market, keep it on a short leash and away from food stalls. It can be easier for one adult to walk the dog along the river while the others shop.

For beach dog rules around the Heads, read WTP's pet-friendly Moruya Heads guide, and confirm current rules on the Eurobodalla Shire Council website.

Moruya Food Week Planner: What Is Open On Which Day

Many Moruya venues keep shorter hours early in the week. This table shows the published hours for the key venues in this guide as checked on 19 October 2026. Confirm with each venue before you go, especially around public holidays.

Day Markets Quantum Brewery The River Moruya Moruya Golf Club (published hours; bistro closed until 27 Oct, see note)

Tuesday SAGE Farmers Market from 3pm No hours listed Not listed as open Lunch 11:30am–2pm, dinner 5pm–8pm

Saturday Country Market 8am–12:30pm 12pm–9pm, live music 4:30pm–7:30pm Lunch from 12pm, dinner 5:30pm–late Lunch and dinner
Sunday None 12pm–6pm Lunch from 12pm Lunch and dinner

The Moruya Waterfront Hotel serves lunch seven days from 12pm to 2pm, and dinner from 5:30pm (until 8pm Sunday to Thursday and 8:30pm on Friday and Saturday), which makes it a useful fallback on a Monday or Tuesday night.

Golf club change this month Moruya Golf Club's website says "Chef Nelson's final day of trade will be Saturday October 17th" and "We re-open our Bistro on Tuesday 27th October." The club has not named the new menu, and hours may change with the reopening, so check the club's site before booking a table, especially for stays between 18 and 26 October.

Quantum Brewery And The Old Moruya Cheese Factory

Quantum Brewery is part of the Moruya Artisan Factory at 57 Hawdon Street, a heritage building that once housed the old Moruya Cheese Factory, built in 1930. The brewery makes craft beer, gin and vodka. The building also has a bar surrounded by vintage artefacts and memorabilia, and outdoor gardens, and it is home to GraniteTown CafeBar.

The published opening hours are Thursday 12pm–6pm, Friday 12pm–9pm, Saturday 12pm–9pm and Sunday 12pm–6pm. Live music runs on Saturdays from 4:30pm to 7:30pm and features South Coast performers, and there is trivia on the last Friday of each month. Visit NSW's listing mentions pizzas and platters.

Saturday works neatly: market in the morning, beach at midday, Quantum for the late-afternoon music. Agree on a designated driver before you leave the house.

The venue's website promotes it as pet friendly; check with the venue before bringing a dog.

Best slot Saturday 4:30pm–7:30pm for live music.

The River Moruya: Riverside Dining With Local Seafood

For a special-occasion meal, The River at 16b Church Street is Moruya's long-running riverside restaurant. Its website describes a modern Australian menu featuring local seafood, seasonal produce, cocktails and a curated wine list. Lunch runs Wednesday to Sunday from 12pm, and dinner runs Thursday to Saturday from 5:30pm.

The restaurant changed hands in 2025. The local news site Region reported that Peter Compton had owned and run it for 18 years before selling, and that a new team of restaurateur Peter Jones-Best, chef Todd Milne and executive chef Anthony O'Shea opened on Thursday 21 August 2025. The same report said seafood and produce are sourced locally, including oysters from Tuross Lake and greens from the SAGE garden in Moruya.

If your group wants to eat there, book well ahead for a Friday or Saturday dinner and ask about larger tables, as there are only three dinner nights a week.

Lunch is a smart alternative. A long Sunday lunch is easier with children and leaves the evening free for the fire pit back at the house.

Moruya Pubs And Clubs For An Easy Group Dinner

Bigger groups often want somewhere relaxed, flexible and reasonably priced. Moruya's pubs and clubs fill that gap. Eurobodalla Coast Tourism names three local pubs, the Air Raid Tavern, the Adelaide and The Waterfront, and says they "feature live music on weekends and great pub food."

Moruya Waterfront Hotel

The Waterfront at 1–5 Princes Highway has a beer garden overlooking the Moruya River and serves family-friendly meals seven days. Its history runs deep: Region reported in March 2026 that it began as the Plough Inn, which was licensed in 1848. Kitchen hours are listed in the food week planner above.

Moruya Golf Club

The golf club at 28A Evans Street lists an on-site Chinese restaurant serving lunch and dinner Tuesday to Sunday, and a cafe open seven days from 9am for coffee and light snacks. Chef Nelson's last day was Saturday 17 October and the bistro reopens on Tuesday 27 October, so the menu may change from then. The club also runs a courtesy bus for door-to-door pick-up and drop-off from Tuesday to Saturday.

Moruya Bowling Club

The bowling club on Shore Street has a restaurant with lunch and dinner menus, and offers free barefoot bowls "for the whole family" most days, excluding competition days. For bus pick-ups, its website says to call 02 4474 2174, subject to availability.

For a group staying at the Heads, call ahead and confirm the bus covers your address before the night begins.

Coffee, Bakeries And Breakfast In Moruya Town

Moruya's main street makes an easy breakfast stop on non-market mornings or after a Saturday shop. Three places listed by Visit NSW give a good starting point.

The Farmers Wife A country-style cafe in Moruya's former bank building at 57 Vulcan Street, serving seasonal dishes and fresh pastries.
Grounded Moruya A coffee-focused cafe at 74 Vulcan Street. Order at the window or sit inside.
Gundary Bakers A bakery cafe at 13 Campbell Street with eat-in and takeaway, and bread, pies and cakes delivered daily from the Bodalla Bakery.

Small cafe hours can change, so check online the day before.

Bertie's 3 Beaches supplies coffee and pantry items and has a coffee machine, so the first coffee of the day can happen on the balcony. A guest review on the listing praised the "incredible views from the coffee machine."

Oysters And Seafood Around Moruya

The Eurobodalla coast is known for its oysters, and Moruya is well placed for them. Eurobodalla Coast Tourism's oyster guide says The River's oysters are usually from nearby Tuross Lake. On Tuesdays, the SAGE market's producer list includes McAsh Oysters from the Clyde River and Narooma Seafood Direct.

Buying unopened oysters or fresh fish at the market and preparing them at the house makes an easy seafood dinner. A cooler bag with ice packs should be enough for the 10–15 minute drive back to the Heads.

For a longer day trip, the tourism guide points to the Oyster Shed on Wray Street on the Clyde River at Batemans Bay, and the Oyster Farmers Daughter on Wagonga Inlet at Narooma.

If you would rather catch your own, WTP's Moruya River fishing and paddling guide covers boat ramps, licences and rules.

Market Picnics At Moruya Heads: Lookout Barbecues, Shelly Beach And Quarry Park

Bread, cheese, fruit and a few baked treats from the market make an easy picnic, and Moruya has good places to eat one.

Moruya Heads Lookout

NSW National Parks lists free gas or electric barbecues, a single picnic table and a step-free paved path around the lookout platform. It can be busy at weekends, so parking in the two small car parks may be limited. The nearest toilets are at Shelly Beach and mobile reception is limited.

Shelly Beach Picnic Area

Parking is at the end of Shelly Beach Road, reached by turning right at the top of Coronation Drive. Eurobodalla National Park is always open but may close in poor weather or high fire danger, so check park alerts first, especially as the spring fire season builds.

Historic Quarry Park, Moruya

On the Moruya River, Quarry Park has a barbecue and public toilets. The NSW Government listing explains that Moruya granite was used in the river's breakwaters and in cladding the pylons and piers of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For more of that story, see WTP's Moruya Heads history guide.

Why Bertie's 3 Beaches Suits A Moruya Markets And Food Weekend

A market weekend works best from a house with a proper kitchen. Bertie's 3 Beaches at Moruya Heads has a large, well-appointed kitchen with a separate stove and oven, fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher. It also has an air fryer, coffee machine, rice cooker, sandwich maker, electric fry pan, blender, kettle and toaster, a kitchen island, and cookware, dishes and utensils. Coffee and pantry items are supplied.

The home sleeps 10 across five bedrooms and three bathrooms. The indoor dining table seats 10, and so does the outdoor dining area. The balcony has a barbecue, water views and a sunset bar, which is exactly where market fish, beef or sausages belong at the end of a beach day.

The location fits the plan. The listing places Moruya Surf Beach, Shelly Beach and Lagoon Beach within a 5-minute walk, with Eurobodalla National Park opposite the home. Quantum Brewery is about 11 minutes' drive and Preddys Wharf Boat Ramp about 5 minutes. You can shop in town in the morning and be back on the sand by lunchtime.

Outside, the fenced yard has a lawn, garden, fire pit, outdoor shower, citrus trees and a herb garden by the laundry. The listing welcomes pets, describes the fenced yard as suited to pet-friendly stays and says the home suits up to two furry family members. Check the current pet conditions when you book. You can see the full details on the Bertie's 3 Beaches listing.

Cooking For 10 At Bertie's: Turning A Market Haul Into Group Meals

Use the markets for the two or three meals that matter most, and keep the rest of the shopping list short.

Saturday Lunch: A Market Platter

Bread, cheese, fruit, preserves and something from a baked-goods stall make a no-cook lunch on the outdoor dining table. Add herbs from the garden by the laundry, and it is on the table in ten minutes.

Saturday Or Tuesday Dinner: The Balcony Barbecue

Fish, beef or sausages from the market go on the balcony barbecue, with salads from market vegetables. With seating for 10 inside and out, the whole group can eat together however the weather turns.

After Dinner: The Fire Pit

On cooler spring evenings, the backyard fire pit is the natural place to finish, unless a fire ban is in place. If the night turns cold, the upstairs lounge has an open fireplace and there is a separate sunroom.

The layout suits mixed groups. Bedroom 5 is a downstairs rumpus room with a bunk bed, Smart TV and bean bags, so children have their own space while adults linger upstairs. A travel cot, high chair and children's dinnerware are provided.

The markets supply the ingredients. The house supplies the long table.

A Market-Led Moruya Heads Weekend Itinerary

The listing's check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by 10am, so a Friday-to-Sunday stay builds naturally around the Saturday market. Times are a guide only, so confirm venue hours first.

Friday: Arrive And Keep Dinner Simple

Check in from 2pm and walk to the nearest beach. Quantum is open until 9pm on Fridays if you want a first drink in town. Otherwise, cook something simple with supplies from home.

Saturday Morning: The Moruya Country Market

Leave the Heads around 7:45am to reach Riverside Park soon after the 8am start. Coffee, a browsing lap, then produce, bread and anything for lunch and dinner. Head back by about 10:30am, stopping at Quarry Park for a river view.

Saturday Afternoon And Evening: Beach, Brewery, Barbecue

Have a market platter lunch at the house, then spend the afternoon at Shelly Beach or Moruya Surf Beach. Drive in for Quantum's live music from 4:30pm with a designated driver, or stay home. Cook the market haul on the balcony barbecue and finish at the fire pit if conditions allow.

Sunday: Slow Breakfast And Check-Out

Use leftover bread and eggs for breakfast, take a last beach walk and check out by 10am. The River and Quantum both open from 12pm on Sundays if you want lunch before the drive home.

Midweek Option: The Tuesday Shop

For a Monday-to-Thursday stay, be at Riverside Park for the SAGE bell at 3pm on Tuesday and cook seafood or beef that night. Book The River for Wednesday lunch or Thursday dinner.

The SAGE Farmers Market is held every Tuesday afternoon from 3pm in the same park. Check each organiser's website or social media pages for updates before you go, particularly in bad weather.

Where are the Moruya markets held?

Both markets are held at Riverside Park in central Moruya, on the banks of the Moruya River. The park has a children's playground with a flying fox, public toilets and parking. From Moruya Heads, allow roughly 10–15 minutes' drive, plus extra time to park on a busy Saturday morning.

What can you buy at the SAGE Farmers Market in Moruya?

SAGE focuses on locally grown or harvested food. Producers listed on its website sell vegetables, fruit and herbs, free-range eggs, grass-fed Angus beef, oysters from the Clyde River and seafood such as snapper and flathead. Stallholders vary from week to week, so buy what looks best on the day rather than following a fixed list.

Are dogs allowed at the Moruya markets?

SAGE says Riverside Park is an on-leash dog-friendly park under Eurobodalla Shire Council rules, but asks farmers market shoppers to consider leaving pets at home because it is a food market. The Country Market does not publish a dog policy. If your dog comes, keep it leashed and away from food stalls.

Is entry to the Moruya Country Market free?

Yes. The NSW Government's events listing shows the Moruya Country Market as free to enter. Bring money for purchases. Stalls handle payment differently, so a card plus some cash is the easiest combination. The market is a not-for-profit and says its profits go to charities, local sport and community events.

When is Quantum Brewery in Moruya open?

Quantum Brewery's published hours are Thursday 12pm–6pm, Friday and Saturday 12pm–9pm and Sunday 12pm–6pm. Live music runs Saturdays from 4:30pm to 7:30pm, and trivia is held on the last Friday of the month. The brewery is at the Moruya Artisan Factory, 57 Hawdon Street, in the old 1930 cheese factory.

What are the best restaurants in Moruya for a group?

The River on Church Street is Moruya's long-running riverside restaurant, with dinner Thursday to Saturday. For relaxed group meals, the Waterfront Hotel serves lunch and dinner seven days, and the golf and bowling clubs offer dining and courtesy buses. Where can you eat oysters near Moruya Heads?

Eurobodalla Coast Tourism says The River in Moruya usually serves oysters from nearby Tuross Lake. On Tuesdays, the SAGE market's producers include McAsh Oysters from the Clyde River. For a day trip, the same tourism guide recommends the Oyster Shed on Wray Street in Batemans Bay, which serves freshly shucked oysters, and the Oyster Farmers Daughter food trailer at Narooma.

Is there anywhere to eat at Moruya Heads itself?

Most of Moruya's cafes, restaurants, pubs and both markets are in Moruya town, a short drive from the Heads. At the Heads, the national park lookout has free barbecues and Shelly Beach has a picnic area, so a market picnic or a meal cooked at your accommodation is often the easiest option.
