Loch Sport Weather In Late Spring And Summer: Warm Days, Windy Afternoons

Loch Sport weather from November to January is mild to warm, breezy and changeable. The nearest full Bureau of Meteorology climate station, at East Sale about 40 km west, averages a top of 21.4°C in November, 23.6°C in December and 25.6°C in January. Afternoon winds there average about 23 km/h, almost half as strong again as at 9am, and November is the wettest month of the year on average. This guide turns those long-term records into a practical plan for a lake-and-beach stay over the next few weeks.

Loch Sport weather at a glance: October to February

Loch Sport, Victoria, sits on a thin strip of land between Lake Victoria and Bass Strait, roughly halfway along Ninety Mile Beach. That position shapes the weather: water on both sides, very little high ground to break the wind, and sea breezes that build through the day.

There is no Bureau of Meteorology climate station in Loch Sport itself, so the most useful long-term record of Gippsland Lakes weather near the town is the East Sale weather station (BOM station 085072), which has kept temperatures since 1945 and rainfall since 1943. The table below shows its averages for the months most visitors are planning right now.

East Sale averagesOctNovDecJanFeb

Three things stand out. November is the wettest month of the whole year on average. Hot days are few before Christmas, at about two in November and four in December. And the afternoon wind barely changes from October to February, so a breezy afternoon is normal summer weather here, not bad luck.

Why East Sale and Lakes Entrance stand in for a Loch Sport weather station

Most weather sites that come up for "Loch Sport weather" are forecasts generated for the town's coordinates. They are handy for the next few days, and a few show modelled monthly averages, but to know what a typical November or December is really like you need a station with a long measured record. The closest are both about 40 km away in a straight line.

Average daily topNovDecJan
East Sale (085072), inland to the west, records since 194521.4°C23.6°C25.6°C
Lakes Entrance weather station (084150), on the coast to the east, records 2006–202621.0°C22.7°C24.3°C

The coastal station runs a little cooler by day than East Sale in early summer, by 0.4°C in November and 0.9°C in December. Loch Sport is surrounded by water, so it is reasonable to expect its days to feel closer to the coastal figures, with the sea breeze taking the edge off the heat. Treat both sets of numbers as a guide rather than a promise for the town itself.

Lakes Entrance's record is short, at 20 years, and it is wetter in November, at 83.0 mm on average against East Sale's 63.9 mm. With the two stations that far apart on rain, the honest answer for Loch Sport is: expect some wet days in November, fewer as summer arrives, and check the forecast for your dates.

November in Loch Sport: mild, showery and changeable

November is a month of in-between weather at Loch Sport. East Sale averages a top of 21.4°C and a low of 9.7°C, so the evenings still call for a jumper and the wood fire may get one last run. Rain falls on about 8 days with 1 mm or more, and the long-term average of 63.9 mm makes it the wettest month of the year.

That does not mean a washed-out stay. The median November rainfall is 55.6 mm, on average only about 2 November days bring 10 mm or more, and sunshine still averages 7.5 hours a day. A November week can easily mix bright, still mornings with a gusty change and a grey afternoon that suits the games room better than the beach.

Good November days

Lake Reeve and The Lakes National Park walks before the summer heat, early fishing from the jetties, and a sunny beach walk along the plank path to Ninety Mile Beach.

What to expect

Days in the high teens to low 20s, cool nights, a chance of a warm spike (East Sale's November record is 40.8°C, set on 21 November 2019) and changeable wind.

What to bring

A rain jacket, a warm layer for evenings, closed shoes for the walking tracks and something for the kids to do indoors on a wet afternoon.

December in Loch Sport: warmer days and the start of the summer crowd

By December the averages move into proper summer territory: a top of 23.6°C, a low of 11.5°C and 7.9 hours of sunshine a day at East Sale. Rain drops to 55.3 mm across about 7 wet days, and the number of 30°C days rises to about 3.6 for the month.

December is also when the summer season begins; Visit Gippsland notes that Loch Sport attracts a large tourist population over the summer. Victorian government schools finish Term 4 on Friday 18 December 2026, and the summer school holidays run from Monday 21 December 2026 to Wednesday 27 January 2027. Christmas Day falls on Friday 25 December and Boxing Day on Saturday 26 December, with the substitute public holiday on Monday 28 December.

For warmer days before the holiday rush, look at the first two weeks of December. For Christmas, book early and plan barbecues around the wind and the fire rules (both below).

January and February: the warmest Loch Sport weather

January and February are the warmest months, with East Sale averaging tops of 25.6°C and 25.4°C and lows around 13°C. They have the fewest rainy days of the year, at 5.6 and 5.1 days with 1 mm or more (45.4 mm and 41.5 mm on average), and January is the sunniest month, with 8.4 hours a day.

Heat is the thing to plan for. East Sale averages about 5.6 days of 30°C or more in January and about 2.1 days of 35°C or more, and its January record is 44.6°C, set on 25 January 2019. These months sit outside the next few weeks for most readers, but they matter if you are booking now for the school holidays.

Wind at Loch Sport: calm mornings, breezy afternoons

Wind is often the part of Loch Sport weather that changes your plans. East Sale's records show the pattern clearly: in November the average wind speed is 15.3 km/h at 9am and 22.8 km/h at 3pm. December is almost identical, at 14.6 km/h and 23.0 km/h.

On Lake Victoria that difference is easy to see. Mornings are often the time for a flat-water paddle, a cast off the jetty or a quiet coffee on the deck. By mid-afternoon the breeze is usually up, whitecaps can form across the open lake, and the ocean side of the strip can be rough.

Read the forecast as an average. The Bureau's Gippsland Lakes Local Waters Forecast gives wind in knots and warns: "Wind forecasts are averages. Wind gusts can be 40 per cent stronger than the forecast, and stronger still in squalls and thunderstorms." A forecast of 15 knots can therefore bring gusts of about 21 knots, or roughly 39 km/h.

Forecast wind (knots)Roughly in km/hWhat it can mean on the lake
59Light air; the CFA's 10 km/h barbecue limit is about 5.4 knots
1019A steady breeze; paddling gets harder into the wind
1528Choppy open water; gusts may reach about 21 knots
2037Rough open water; a day for the shore unless you are experienced
2546Strong; check the Bureau's warnings before going anywhere near the water

Conversions use 1 knot = 1.852 km/h and are rounded. The "what it can mean" column is general guidance, not an official threshold.

How to check the weather in Loch Sport before you head out

Because conditions change through the day, a good habit is a quick check at breakfast and again before any afternoon outing. Four sources cover almost everything a visitor needs.

Bureau of Meteorology town forecast

The Loch Sport forecast gives the daily temperatures, rain chance, UV Index and recommended sun protection times. Some search results point to "Loch", a different town in South Gippsland, so check the name.

Gippsland Lakes Local Waters Forecast

The Bureau's lakes forecast is the one to read before boating or paddling. It gives wind direction and strength in knots for today and the next three days.

Loch Sport Boat Club lake weather

The club's lake weather page shows conditions recorded at the club on Charlies Street: wind, gusts, temperature, rain, UV and a lake camera that updates every 30 seconds.

Warnings and fire information

Check the CFA West and South Gippsland district page for the fire danger rating and any Total Fire Ban, and the VicEmergency app or hotline (1800 226 226) for emergencies.

The boat club's own page puts it simply: "Always check official forecasts and warnings before heading onto the water." The camera is a useful extra for seeing the lake surface before you carry a kayak down.

What the weather means for lake and beach days

Loch Sport gives you two very different kinds of water within a few minutes of each other, and the weather affects them differently. Carlenes Getaway is a 3-minute walk from Lake Victoria and a 10-minute drive from Ninety Mile Beach, so you can pick the better option each day.

Lake Victoria is sheltered from ocean swell, but it is a big, open body of water, and an afternoon breeze builds chop quickly. Calm mornings suit swimming close to shore, paddling and jetty fishing. Safe Transport Victoria requires a Level 100, 50 or 50S lifejacket on kayaks and canoes on all Victorian waterways; stand-up paddleboarders within 400 m of the shore are exempt.

Ninety Mile Beach weather is often rougher than the lake's, because the beach faces Bass Strait. Visit Gippsland lists the beach at Loch Sport as not patrolled, with strong currents and winds as its hazards. Access is a 300 m walk from the car park along a plank path. Golden Beach, further south, has some of the calmer water along Ninety Mile Beach and is patrolled at peak periods over summer. For swimming detail, including rips and blue-green algae checks, read our Loch Sport beaches guide.

Hot days and the fire season in Wellington Shire

Loch Sport is in Wellington Shire, which sits in the CFA's West and South Gippsland fire weather district. The CFA's Fire Danger Period for Wellington started on 5 October 2026 and is listed to run until 1 May 2027, so fire restrictions in Wellington Shire apply for the whole of a late-spring or summer stay.

The Fire Danger Period is not the same thing as a Total Fire Ban. The first applies every day of the season; the second is declared for days of very high risk. Both affect something many holiday groups plan to do: cook outside.

SituationBarbecue rules on the CFA's "Can I or can't I?" page
Fire Danger Period (every day until the period ends)Only if the wind is less than 10 km/h, the area 3 metres around and above is clear of anything that can burn, someone who can put it out stays with it, and it is turned off or put out when finished
Total Fire Ban dayOnly a gas or electric barbecue, commercially made or a fixed non-flammable structure, placed stably, with 3 metres clear, 10 litres of water or a connected hose ready and an adult there the whole time. No wood or heat beads; fire pits, braziers, chimineas and campfires are banned

Here is the practical point for Loch Sport weather: the average 3pm wind at East Sale in November and December is about 23 km/h, more than double the 10 km/h limit. Plan barbecues on the deck for a calm morning or evening, and if the leaves and branches are moving, cook inside. Rules can change, so check the CFA page on the day.

Sun and UV: the season is already here

SunSmart, run by Cancer Council Victoria, says "Victoria's sun protection season goes from mid-August to April" and that "sun protection is required whenever the UV is 3 or above". On a mild, breezy November day it is easy to forget that the sun is strong, especially out on the water where there is no shade.

The Bureau's Loch Sport town forecast shows the UV Index and the hours when sun protection is recommended. In the last week of October 2026 it was forecasting UV peaks of 7 to 9 (High to Very High), with sun protection recommended from about 9:10–9:20am until 4:20–4:30pm. The boat club's lake weather page also shows live UV. A simple routine works: hats, sunscreen and sunglasses go in the beach bag by default, and the middle of the day is for the shady deck, the house or a cafe.

A weather-by-weather plan for a Loch Sport stay

Rather than fixing each day in advance, it is often easier to keep a short menu of options and match them to the conditions. These ideas use places listed near the house.

Calm, sunny morning

Walk 3 minutes to Lake Victoria for a swim or paddle, try the jetties for a fish, or drive into The Lakes National Park (about 6 minutes away) for the 30-minute return Lake Reeve Nature Trail from the Lookout Tower car park.

Breezy afternoon

Swap the water for a round at Loch Sport Golf Club (a 15-minute walk), the Lake Street playground and skatepark (6 minutes on foot), or a coffee at Lochy Coffee or Nauti Bites Cafe.

Hot day

Lake swim early, lunch in the shade, a long afternoon in the downstairs games room, then the Lakeview Bar & Bistro at the Loch Sport Marina Hotel (about 2 minutes by car) for the evening.

Wet or grey day

Ping pong, snooker, foosball and board games at the house, a DVD by the wood fire, and a quick run to Loch Sport FoodWorks (a 7-minute walk) for supplies.

Why Carlenes Getaway suits Loch Sport's changeable weather

A Loch Sport stay works best when the house can carry the bad-weather hours as well as the good ones, and that is where Carlenes Getaway earns its place. It is an entire house for up to 8 guests, with 3 bedrooms and Lake Reeve views from the home, a 3-minute walk to Lake Victoria and a 10-minute drive to Ninety Mile Beach.

When the afternoon wind comes up, there is a dedicated downstairs games hub with a ping pong table, a snooker table, foosball, a hockey table and a poker table setup, plus chess, checkers, backgammon, Parcheesi, board games, toys and puzzles and a second TV in the rumpus area. A large Smart TV with a DVD collection and a comfortable modular sofa in the lower-level living area make wet evenings easy.

For the cooler nights still common in November, there is a wood fire heater with firewood provided. For warm December and January days, there is reverse-cycle air-conditioning (two units across the home) and four ceiling fans, plus ceiling fans in the bedrooms. The BBQ deck, balcony and 6-seat outdoor dining area are made for still mornings and evenings, and the indoor dining area seats 10 when it is better to eat inside.

Practical touches help in mixed weather too: a washing machine and clothes dryer for wet gear and beach towels, 8 bath towels supplied for every stay, a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and coffee machine, Wi-Fi measured at 59 Mbps for checking the forecast, and a large parking area that suits vans, boats and trailers.

Who this stay suits, and how a group uses it when the weather turns

The layout makes it easy to split up when the weather does not suit everyone. Bedroom 1 has a queen bed, Bedrooms 2 and 3 each have a double bed, and there is a double sofa bed in the second living area. All three bedrooms are upstairs on the main floor with the main bathroom and a separate toilet, and there is a half bathroom with a toilet and sink on the lower level beside the games hub.

Families with young children

Two portacots, two change tables and a high chair are available on request. The fenced yard and games hub give kids somewhere to burn energy when the beach is too windy.

Fishing and boating groups

Early starts on calm mornings, gear dried in the laundry, and plenty of parking for a boat and trailer. The afternoon wind becomes snooker time.

Friends and couples

Long lunches on the deck when the wind drops, a fire on a cool night and evening drinks on the wraparound deck looking across Lake Reeve.

Travelling with pets

Pet-friendly stays for up to 2 pets are available by approval before booking, with a fenced yard. Our pet-friendly Loch Sport guide covers dog rules and walks.

Check-in is from 3:00pm with self check-in by lockbox, and check-out is by 10:00am. See all the details on the Carlenes Getaway listing.

A three-day Loch Sport plan that flexes with the forecast

This sample plan assumes one calm morning, breezy afternoons and one grey day. Swap the days to match the forecast.

Day 1: arrive and settle in

Check in from 3:00pm and read the next three days of the Gippsland Lakes forecast to pick the calmest morning. If the evening is still, cook on the deck; if not, eat inside at the 10-seat table, then walk down to Lake Victoria for the last of the light.

Day 2: the calm morning

Be on the water early for a paddle, a swim close to shore or a fish from the jetty, then walk the Lake Reeve Nature Trail before it warms up. As the breeze builds after lunch, walk Ninety Mile Beach rather than swim, or stay in for a games-room tournament.

Day 3: the grey or windy day

Sleep in, light the wood fire if it is cool and set up ping pong and a board game. Walk to a local cafe for coffee, and if the weather clears, play a round at Loch Sport Golf Club. Check-out is by 10:00am on your last morning.

What to pack for Loch Sport weather in November and December

1Layers: T-shirts for warm days and a fleece or jumper for evenings, which average 9.7°C in November and 11.5°C in December at East Sale.
2A windproof rain jacket: an essential for a breezy, showery November.
3Sun protection: hats, sunscreen and sunglasses for every outing; in late October 2026 the Bureau was already forecasting UV peaks of 7 to 9.
4Lifejackets: if you are bringing your own kayak or canoe, bring a Level 100, 50 or 50S lifejacket for each paddler.
5Closed shoes: for the sandy national park tracks and the plank path to the beach.
6Gas, not charcoal, for any portable cooker: solid fuel cannot be used outdoors on a Total Fire Ban day.
7Indoor favourites: a few films or a card game add to the house's DVD collection and games hub for a wet afternoon.

Linen, bedding and 8 bath towels are supplied, along with shampoo, body wash, soap and a hair dryer, so you can pack lighter on the basics.
