Loch Sport Food Guide

Loch Sport Marina Hotel And Food Guide: Pub, RSL, Cafes And Bakery

The Loch Sport Marina Hotel at 1–3 Basin Boulevard is the town's lakeside pub, also known locally as the Lakeview Bar & Bistro, with outdoor tables looking across Lake Victoria. Published hours differ between listings, so call 03 5146 0475 before you go. Around it you will find Lochy Coffee (8am–2pm daily), Nauti Bites Cafe (Tuesday to Sunday), RSL dinners on Thursday and Saturday nights, a bakery, a kebab van, two grocery stores and clubs that welcome visitors. This guide covers who is open when, what each place does best and how to plan a spring food weekend around them.

Key Takeaway

Loch Sport's food scene runs on a weekly rhythm, not a city timetable. The Marina Hotel is the lakeside pub, the RSL cooks on Thursday and Saturday nights, Lochy Coffee opens every morning and Nauti Bites covers lunch and dinner from Tuesday to Sunday. Check hours before you leave the house, because small-town venues change them often.

Before You Go Out

Three quick checks save a wasted trip.

1 Call the pub: The Marina Hotel's published hours differ between listings. Ring 03 5146 0475 to confirm kitchen times.
2 Book the RSL: Thursday and Saturday dinners fill up. The club asks you to call 03 5146 0841 and leave a message.
3 Mind Mondays: Nauti Bites is closed on Mondays and the RSL is not a Monday option, so plan to cook that night.

Eat Well Without Driving Much

Most of the town's food stops sit within a short walk or drive of the lake.

1 Walk for coffee: Lochy Coffee and Nauti Bites are each about a 6-minute walk from Carlene's Getaway.
2 Shop on foot: FoodWorks is about a 7-minute walk and stays open into the evening.
3 Short hop to the pub: The Marina Hotel is about 2 minutes away by car.

Where To Eat In Loch Sport: The Quick Answer

Loch Sport sits on a narrow strip of land between Lake Victoria and Bass Strait, and its eating options suit a small lakeside town rather than a restaurant strip. You will not queue for a famous cafe, but you will eat fish and chips within sight of the water.

The table below lists every food stop in this guide, what it is best for, the hours its own page or the council's visitor listing gave when we checked on 19 October 2026, and roughly how far each is from Carlene's Getaway using the listing's map estimates. Treat the hours as a starting point and confirm before you go.

Loch Sport Marina Hotel: Lakeside Meals And Sunset Drinks

The Marina Hotel sits beside the marina basin on Basin Boulevard, and Visit Gippsland's town page suggests grabbing a table outside for views across Lake Victoria to the high country. The council's town page sums up the setting as the place "where the sun comes up in the ocean and goes down in the lake", and the hotel's outdoor tables are a front-row seat for the second half of that.

The InGippsland directory listing describes it as right by the water's edge, suited to lunch, dinner, a drink or a coffee while watching the sunset, and mentions a good chance of seeing dolphins on the lake. The same listing mentions home delivery of meals and drinks and a courtesy bus for patrons.

You may also hear the venue called the Lakeview Bar & Bistro. The local Lions Club, for example, mentions its lucky-envelopes machine at the Lakeview Bar & Bistro, and the WTP listing map uses both names.

Expect a country pub bistro rather than fine dining. On Tripadvisor it rated 3.7 out of 5 from 84 reviews when we checked; the two newest reviews (January and February 2026) praise the lakeside seating, while several 2023–24 reviews criticised service and food. Arrive early in school holidays and order before the sunset rush.

Book the table for the view, order the pub classics, and time dinner so the sunset is the main course.

Marina Hotel Hours, Bookings And Getting There

When we checked on 19 October 2026, the two public listings did not agree on hours.

InGippsland listing Monday to Sunday: public bar 11am–11pm, bistro lunch 12pm–2pm, bistro dinner 5:30pm–8pm.
Wellington Shire visitor site Closed Monday and Tuesday; open from 11am Wednesday to Sunday, with later closing on Friday and Saturday.
What to do Call 03 5146 0475 or check the hotel's Facebook page on the day, and ask about kitchen times and table bookings.

From Carlene's Getaway the hotel is about a 2-minute drive. The marina itself is about a 15-minute walk, so a fine evening can turn into a stroll along the lake there and a short drive back. If you plan to drink, sort a designated driver or ask about the courtesy bus when you book.

Families should ask about a kids' menu when booking; Tripadvisor lists highchairs among the venue's features.

Loch Sport RSL: Thursday And Saturday Club Dinners

The Loch Sport RSL is the town's other big night out. It sits at the Charles Street Recreation Reserve, 14 Charlies Street, alongside the bowls and boat clubs. Visitors are welcome; the council's listing quotes the club inviting people to bring family and friends.

In its most recent update in The Link (the community newsletter, August–September 2026), the club said it is "open every Thursday & Saturday from 5 pm". Thursdays bring a meal plus the popular meat tray and vege box raffles. Saturdays add a breakfast pack raffle. The bistro kitchen is run by chef Nicole and her team, who the club says are with it "all the way to 2027".

The club also runs a Cheap Eats Tuesday every second Tuesday from 5pm, with $20 meals and $7 schooners in happy hour. The August–September issue listed dates in August and September only, so call the club to find out whether a cheap-eats Tuesday falls during your stay.

To book, call 03 5146 0841 and leave a message; the club calls back to confirm. The council's visitor listing shows different nights, another reason to ring first.

Lochy Coffee: Breakfast And Coffee Opposite Lake Victoria

Lochy Coffee is the easiest morning ritual in town. It sits at 48 Lake Street, opposite the water, and both the council's visitor site and the Discover Loch Sport directory list it as open 8am–2pm every day. The directory adds one exception: it closes on Christmas Day.

The council listing describes a focus on "delicious foods, wonderful coffee and great hospitality", while the directory calls it a "small coffee shop with a big outlook", serving coffee, a wide range of teas, hot and cold food and cakes. Phone orders are taken on 0423 927 754, handy when you are collecting eight coffees. With a 2pm close, it is a breakfast-and-lunch stop.

From Carlene's Getaway it is about a 6-minute walk. A good plan on the first morning is to walk down for coffee, then carry it across the road to the foreshore and watch the lake wake up before deciding on the day.

Nauti Bites Cafe: Fish And Chips, Burgers And Delivery

Nauti Bites Cafe at 64 Sanctuary Road covers the gap between coffee and the pub. Its own ordering page promotes fresh fish and chips, gourmet burgers and coffee, and lists two weekly specials: Parma on Wednesdays and roast chicken on Fridays.

Hours on the cafe's ordering page when we checked:

1 Monday: Closed.
2 Tuesday to Thursday: 10:30am–2pm, then 5pm–7pm.
3 Friday: 10:30am–2pm, then 5pm–9pm.
4 Saturday: 9am–2pm, then 5pm–9pm.
5 Sunday: 10am–2pm.

Two details matter for holiday groups. First, the cafe delivers within 20 kilometres for a $6 fee, with online ordering and pre-orders available, so a fish-and-chip dinner can come to the deck. Second, it allows BYO for seated guests at lunch and dinner, with $2 corkage per person. The cafe recommends booking on weekends, public holidays and other busy periods.

Carlene's Getaway is about a 6-minute walk away, which makes a Friday roast-chicken pick-up or a Saturday fish-and-chip run easy.

JK's Loch Sport Bakery And Takeaway At The BP

The bakery and the BP service station sit across National Park Road from each other near the Goodlett Avenue corner, about a 5-minute drive from the house.

JK's Loch Sport Bakery is listed in the community newsletter's town guide on National Park Road, opposite the BP. Check its Facebook page for trading days before planning a pie-and-coffee morning around it.

Loch Sport Kebabs runs from a permanent van at the BP. The council's visitor listing says it serves kebabs, HSP (halal snack pack), falafel and hot chips, and that the service station's mini market also has hot pies, sandwiches, wraps and coffee. It lists the kebab van's hours as 1pm–8pm daily. The Discover Loch Sport directory says orders can be placed through the business's Facebook page.

The BP is also handy for fuel on the way to Ninety Mile Beach, and the General Store on Government Road has a 24/7 fuel terminal for late arrivals.

Groceries In Loch Sport: FoodWorks, The General Store And Gourmet Shed

Self-catering is the backbone of a Loch Sport stay, and the town is better supplied than many visitors expect.

FoodWorks Loch Sport at 48 Lake Street is the main supermarket, about a 7-minute walk from Carlene's Getaway. The council's visitor listing shows it open Monday 8am–7pm, Tuesday to Saturday 7am–7pm and Sunday 8am–7pm. That is long enough to shop after a beach afternoon.

Loch Sport General Store at 2–4 Government Road calls itself a one-stop shop "for everything from bait to birthday cards". In The Link it lists groceries, ice creams, fishing tackle, camping gear, basic hardware, a coin laundry, a bike repair station, the licensed post office and 24/7 fuel. Its standard hours are Monday to Saturday 9am–5pm and Sunday 9am–3pm.

The Gourmet Shed – Farmgate at 5 Centre Road sells homemade relishes, chutneys, fresh lemon curd, jams, marmalade and savoury butters, according to the council listing. It asks visitors to check its social pages for opening days.

Neirbos Eats, based on Seagull Drive, sells toasties, wraps, milkshakes and barista coffee at markets and events around Gippsland, according to the council listing; check its Facebook page for where it is trading.

Bigger shop on the way in Sale is the nearest large town. Parks Victoria puts The Lakes National Park, at the eastern end of Loch Sport, 63 kilometres east of Sale, so a big stock-up there is best done on the drive in rather than as a separate trip.

Loch Sport Clubs That Welcome Visitors: Bowls, Golf And Boat Club

Several Loch Sport clubs invite holidaymakers. These details come from each club's own update in the August–September 2026 Link, so confirm before you go as summer programs may differ.

Loch Sport Bowls Club Social bowls Wednesday and Sunday from 12:30pm, $10 green fees, bar open. Learn to Bowl on Wednesdays from 12:30pm. Social darts Monday from 7pm for $5. Trivia afternoons on the fourth Sunday of the month, $10 entry, BYO snacks; book through the club's Facebook page.
Loch Sport Golf Club An 18-hole sand-green course beside Lake Victoria. Green fees are $20 a round and juniors under 16 play free. Sign in at the kiosk; clubs and buggies can be arranged in advance. Visitors can join Wednesday and Saturday competitions: register at 9am for a 9:30am tee-off.
Loch Sport Boat Club Established in 1965 on Charles Street, the club is building a social side called Peli's. The town guide in The Link lists it as open for drinks and nibbles overlooking the lake. The club is volunteer-run, so check its Facebook page for open times.

The golf club is about a 15-minute walk from Carlene's Getaway, so a morning round and lunch at Nauti Bites make a car-free half day. The bowls club's trivia runs on the fourth Sunday of the month, which this spring means 25 October and 22 November; confirm on the club's Facebook page that a session is on.

Who Is Open When: A Loch Sport Food Week At A Glance

Mondays are the quietest. Use this weekly view, drawn from the listings above, to plan which nights you cook and which nights you go out; "call" means the hours conflicted or were missing when we checked.

Thursday and Saturday are the big nights out; Sunday and Monday evenings suit a barbecue at the house.

Picnics And Barbecues On The Lake Foreshore And At Point Wilson

The Lake Foreshore Trail, described in The Link's visitor guide, runs along Lake Victoria with a Lions barbecue shelter, a playground and skate park, outdoor gym equipment, a jetty, public art by local artist Simon White and flood-history markers on the rocks. The Lake Street picnic and barbecue area is about a 6-minute walk from Carlene's Getaway.

For a picnic further afield, The Lakes National Park is about a 6-minute drive from the house, and Point Wilson inside it is a small picnic area on the shore of Lake Victoria. Parks Victoria lists picnic tables and a shelter, toilets, gas and wood-fired barbecues and a jetty. You can swim or launch a canoe or kayak there. Bring your own drinking water and take all rubbish home, because no bins are provided. Dogs are not allowed at Point Wilson.

Fire Danger Period is already on The CFA declared the Fire Danger Period for Wellington Shire from 1am on Monday 5 October 2026. Before lighting any wood barbecue, check the CFA's "Can I or can't I?" guidance and the day's fire danger rating, and never light a wood fire on a Total Fire Ban day. Gas barbecues are the simpler choice through summer.

Eating Out With Kids And Dogs In Loch Sport

With kids: takeaway fish and chips on the foreshore, beside the playground and skate park, is the easiest family meal. Nauti Bites' delivery helps after a big beach day, and at the RSL you can ask about children's meals when you book.

With dogs: none of the venues we checked publishes a clear dog policy, so ask before you arrive. Outdoor seating is your best chance, and takeaway eaten in a dog-friendly spot is the reliable fallback. In The Lakes National Park, Point Wilson does not allow dogs. For local leash rules on beaches and foreshores, read our pet-friendly Loch Sport guide.

Never leave a dog in a parked car while you eat, even on a mild spring day.

Food Dates For Late Spring In And Around Loch Sport

A few dates over the next two months are worth building a meal around.

Sunday 25 October The fourth Sunday of the month, when the bowls club holds trivia. Check its Facebook page and book a table.
Saturday 31 October Loch Sport Halloween, 2pm–6pm: a walk-through from 2pm at 404 National Park Road and mini-games from 4pm at 69 National Park Road. Gold coin donation, with proceeds to the Loch Sport CFA. Follow it with an RSL Saturday dinner.
30 October to 1 November The Sale Show runs from Friday 30 October to Sunday 1 November, the weekend before Melbourne Cup Day on Tuesday 3 November. Our Loch Sport Melbourne Cup weekend guide covers that trip.

Looking further ahead, the Lions Club lists a children's Christmas party in December and a Bush Market on 3 January, and the Loch Sport Fishing Association's CShell Loch Sport Surf Fishing Classic is set for Saturday 2 January 2027. If you are fishing for your dinner, our Loch Sport fishing guide covers licences, bag limits and lake spots.

Why Carlene's Getaway Suits A Loch Sport Food Weekend

A town with a short list of restaurants rewards a house with a proper kitchen, and that is where Carlene's Getaway earns its place. The Carlene's Getaway listing describes a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher and coffee machine, cooking essentials including oil, salt and pepper, and tomato, BBQ and mustard sauces already supplied, plus a welcome pack for every stay.

For group meals there is a separate indoor dining area that seats 10, and a BBQ deck with outdoor dining for six. The large wraparound deck looks across Lake Reeve, so a barbecue on a still evening comes with a view. As one guest review on the listing put it: "Lots of wildlife to spot from the back deck too."

Location matters too. Lochy Coffee and Nauti Bites are each about a 6-minute walk, FoodWorks about 7 minutes, Lake Victoria about 3 minutes and the Marina Hotel about a 2-minute drive. The house sleeps eight across three bedrooms and a sofa bed, takes up to two pets by approval, has a fenced yard, and offers a large parking area that suits boats and trailers. That last point matters if dinner is whatever you catch on Lake Victoria.

On a cool or wet evening the wood fire heater and the downstairs games hub (ping pong, snooker, foosball, a hockey table and a poker table setup) make a night in easy.

How A Group Of Eight Eats Well Over A Loch Sport Weekend

Feeding eight people in a small town is easier with a simple rule: one or two meals out, the rest cooked together at the house.

Families can cook breakfasts at home and save the Marina Hotel for an early dinner. Portacots, change tables and a high chair are available on request, which makes self-catering with little ones much easier.

Friends' groups can rotate cooking teams for the barbecue nights and book the RSL as a group on Thursday or Saturday.

Anglers can buy bait at the General Store, park the boat at the house and cook the catch on the BBQ deck.

Eat out for the view and the company. Eat in for the deck, the fire and the games room.

A Two-Night Loch Sport Food Weekend Itinerary

Friday: Arrive, Shop And Let Someone Else Cook

Check in from 3pm, stock up in Sale on the way or at FoodWorks (open to 7pm), then order Nauti Bites' Friday roast chicken or fish and chips before its 9pm close and eat on the deck as the light fades over Lake Reeve.

Saturday Morning: Coffee By The Lake

Walk to Lochy Coffee for 8am, then wander the Lake Foreshore Trail. Golfers can register at 9am for the Saturday competition or play a casual $20 round.

Saturday Afternoon: Beach Or Picnic

Pack a picnic from FoodWorks (and the bakery, if it is open) and take it to Point Wilson (no dogs) or out to Ninety Mile Beach, about a 10-minute drive. Use a gas barbecue rather than a wood fire during the Fire Danger Period.

Saturday Evening: Sunset Then The Club

Have a sunset drink at the Marina Hotel, then head to the RSL for a booked dinner and the raffles, or stay at the hotel for a bistro meal.

Sunday: Slow Breakfast And Home

Cook a big breakfast with whatever is left before the 10am check-out. Staying in town longer? Nauti Bites serves until 2pm on Sundays.

Loch Sport Food Checklist Before You Arrive

Run through this in the week before you travel.

1 Pub hours: Confirm which days the Marina Hotel bistro is open during your stay.
2 RSL booking: Book Thursday or Saturday dinner and ask whether a cheap-eats Tuesday falls in your dates; bring cash for raffles.
3 Specialty groceries: Bring anything unusual from home or Sale; FoodWorks covers the basics.
4 Fire rules: Check the CFA's guidance and fire danger rating before any outdoor cooking.
5 Fishing licence: If dinner depends on the lake, sort your Victorian recreational fishing licence before you go unless you are exempt.

Plan Your Loch Sport Food Weekend

One lakeside pub, one busy club, a coffee shop by the water and a well-stocked supermarket are plenty for a long weekend when the house does the rest.
